I know we are all upset with the way things turned out this year but I for one am proud of these kids and I look forward to watching them continue to play. We all remember the NIT when X went to the semi. Sure it sucks we won't be in the dance but it will still be fun to watch these guys play a few more games. If this holds true we will play Ohio first game and will have two home games for sure maybe three.

Is the NIT what we expect of X? No! But at the same time, this year has extenuating circumstances.

I am very proud of the guys and the coaches and more X basketball is always a good thing to brighten the day. I look forward to this team playing in the NIT and hope to see J Farr get some playing time.

There is some good story lines with the nit possibly. Dez Wells coming back to Cintas. Xavier possibly playing future Big East foe Prov and St Johns. Also another matchup with St Joes. It won't be as fun as the dance but it will still be enjoyable.

Well I asked off thurs and fri the next two weeks for the dance. My guess is they won't play on those days so I won't be there. I do think they will get 6k. If Ohio is here they might get more bc of all the ou alumni. If we play Maryland I can see 8k so everybody can officially say goodbye to Dez.

Won't get 6,000. Attendance has been flirting around that number all year. No where near as many people will come to an NIT game as a regular season game. Any chance we deny the invite? I'm just wondering- has any team really denied invites lately?

I'm not talking tickets sold. I am talking about the number that comes through the turnstiles. There is no way X would get above 6,500 for an NIT game. I'd bet good money they wouldn't get 6K.

Also- no beer sold for an NIT game. Not sure if that drives people away but it could.

1) No way we turn down an NIT bid. There is nothing but good that can come from playing another competitive game in a "win and advance" scenario.

2) My attendance is based on if nothing else is going on that night.

3) Turnstile attendance has been well north of 6K.

Most of the NIT bracket projections have us a 4 seed or worse (most worse).

I don't know if any of these guys is Joe Lunardi, as I haven't really had to pay much attention to the NIT the past couple dozen years.

This guy has us a 7 seed, playing Iowa in the first round, and potential second round matchup with Baylor or Texas A&M. Dayton is mentioned as one of the last 4 out.

The post Nuts is referring to is dated March 5; here's an updated (and final) NIT bracket - nobody is going to be stealing any NCAA bids today:

http://nycbuckets.com/2013/03/nit-bracketology-this-is-it/

Xavier is being projected as a #5 seed going out to Stanford (sound familiar?); they're also projecting UK as an NIT team as one of the 4 #1 seeds.

Other teams of note:

UMass (#1 seed)
Charlotte (#3 seed)
Providence (#3 seed)
Saint Joe's (#4 seed)
St. John's (#6 seed)

No mention of La Salle - they probably figure they're getting one of the last NCAA bids.

This does suck we are talking about the NIT, this is Dayton's MO not ours. However, it is what it is and we should all be very thankful that we are still going to get to watch X play. As far as UD goes I believe they were invited to the CBI and CIT but have turned them down.

This site has x as a 3 seed still with a potential 2nd round matchup with Dez!

The three projection sites that page links to also have Xavier a #5 seed, so I guess that's a pretty solid consensus. Two of them even agree on us playing Florida State in the first round (the other has us at Arizona State).

Where are these ridiculous Ohio projections coming from? Ohio is a bubble team for the NIT according to most projections, with X in the 3-5 seed range. People seem to think the NIT is like it used to be, with match-ups being geographically generated. It's not. It's chosen exactly like the NCAA tournament. I personally like the projection I saw of Northern Iowa in the first round with a shot at UK in the second.

There are 9 teams locked into automatic bids to the NIT as the regular season champions of the poop conferences. Assuming they get the lowest seeds, it is perfectly possible that a bubble NIT team could be a 6 seed and Xavier a 3. However, currently it looks like Ohio is not going to make the field at all.

Or college insider.com tournament.

The CIT is exclusively for low level conferneces. I don't think they'd even consider inviting an Atlantic Ten team.

The CBI is a complete shit show. I'd actually be dissapointed if we opted to play in it. If we want a spot in that tournament, they'd be happy to sell us one. Last I heard it was $60k to the Gazelle Group if you wanted to play at home. They also seem to favor coaches who are clients of the Gazelle Group, but I'm sure that's a coincidence.

I actually like the CIT, and I do follow it, but the CBI is a scam job. No thanks. I realize that basketball is a revenue sport. Even with that, I'm still not opposed to paying money to participate in a postseaosn event....necessarily. I am against giving money to the Gazelle Group, though.

As much as I hate them expanding the NCAA Tournament, I do wish they'd take the NIT out to 64. It's not a championship event anyway. It's more like a jamboree. So, why not invite more teams?? But...whatever.

End the season. The CBI is for lower tier programs Like Dayton.

Apparently the CBI is announced later on their twitter. Let's hope our name isn't on there.

I'll actually be dissapointed if we go to the CBI. I won't be surprised.

IT's not that I think of the tournament being below our caliber. It's that I don't like the idea of being extorted.

In reality, Xavier did not beat a decent team on the road all year. All the good wins were at home.

Was hoping to play, but understand why we aren't.

Somehow Dayton's fans are under the impression we are upset over being snubbed by the NIT. No I don't think we are upset I think we are shocked. Then again it's been so long since we have been in this position, I don't know how we are to act.

Personally, I'm thrilled. The only reason you should still be playing basketball this late in the season, is if there is the potential to win a national championship. Therefore, since we're not in the NCAA Tournament, I'm happy if we entirely pack it up.

Yeah, this is the season we were afraid we'd have - but it still hurts like heck when it happens!

Shannon tweeted that the season is over - does that mean that we would not accept invites to Romper Room 1 or 2?

pitt and butler ended up in the CBI final 4 last year - both are in the tourney this year.

Pitt and Butler are also perennial NCAA tourney teams and both teams do well. Do all of you people really think we're so "above" those programs that we should turn down an invite?

I agree, I do not think we are above it or should turn down an invite.

Where has this elitist attitude that I see creeping up this season come from? Its not a good look. XU basketball has come a long way since 1982 but less those forget how long X has come since 1999. No reason to whisk season away. I feel like "recent fans" (Cintas Era) are those with this attitude. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if this is those from the Gardens Era, SHAME ON YOU!

Yes we are above the CBI and CIT. I don't care who has played in that tournament before. The NIT is one thing but the CBI? Nah, just end the season unless you can lower the entry fee by agreeing to play on the road. X needs road experience so if they can play on the road I might be okay with them doing that.

Not quite sure. But I would like another beat writer. She hasn't provided any sort of insight today or all season. Heck, half the time she could break news faster by reading this site.

Well there you go. Interesting. Do you guys think they let the players decide or have a vote? Or is it strictly an administration/coaching decision?

I think those tourneys cost money to play in, and the decision to decline the invites was not made by the players.

Definitely glad we will not be participating in the CBI. I know I shouldn't feel this way, but also relieved that we will not be in the NIT.

Shannon Russell had the following quote from Chris Mack on twitter " Our resume, to be quite frank, wasn’t quite strong enough to be in either tournament." I love Makc's brutal honesty.

This offseason should be fun. We get to await the official anouncement of us switching conferences.

I wouldn't have minded a little more basketball in the NIT.
KY was the national champ last year...this year NIT.

But it's over. Sort of hard to imagine.
Glad we have the Big East to focus on.

I go back to the Gardens. I don't think my position is elitist, as much as it is reasonable - you're either playing for something or you're playing for nothing (no reason).

From a basketball standpoint, they should have played whichever tournament would have them. It's ultimately about the competition presented before you, no mater the venue or the history of that school. It's about the experience of the games.

This team could have used this experience to grow and enjoy more time playing together. Fans could have enjoyed watching them play.

Those who think this program is above others need to think more about the big picture of these competitions. There's more than one path on any journey.

I do understand if the school felt that paying for entry into a competition wasn't financially possible. I doubt if schools make any money from the likes of the CBI unless they get a sellout, which might be a risky bet.

I am definitely in this camp. Practice and play all the games you can. I would also like to see James Farr get some serious PT. A CBI tournament berth would be about the future not the present.

If Reynolds, Myles, and Stainbrook were all eligible... it might make some sense. Although if they had been eligible this season maybe we make the NIT or NCAA. Giving this team more time in the CIT or CBI just doesn't make sense from my point of view.

Stainbrook couldn't be eligible because of his transfer - can't sweat over that.

I just hope that Reynolds, Davis and the incoming recruits hit the books this year - it gets frustrating to see guys ruled ineligible on an annual basis around here.

This is the only thing I considered a reason to go on. It would be a long shot (not familiar with the finer points of 'eligibility" issues) but one consideration. Otherwise, with them being shorthanded and guys on their way 'out the door' and the possibility of injury...definitely NOT worth it.

Nothing more to learn or prove this year otherwise.

We need to focus on moving on. We need to learn how to play against the level we will be seeing in the BE and top notch OOC opponents we will need to beat to be where we expect to be. We're not going to get that at this point.

I don't even think the NIT would have moved us forward at all - so f'-it.

I don't see it as snobbery - or - 'above it all'. Heck, I sat on the floor in the student section at Schmidt when my dad went to X on the GI bill (not to mention the football games) - and sat in the Coors Corner and pissed in the 'trough' at the Gardens.

Yes we've come a long way. In fact, we've endured too much to look back now!

We don't want to 'just make' the NCAA anyway - we want to be highly seeded with a reasonable path toward a national championship.

Despite the glimmers of encouraging basketball this year, this team was obviously not there.

Let's move on and talk about next year!
