I know a lot of us followed Jason last season so I thought I'd get an official thread going for 2013.

For those that don't know, Jason was below the money line pretty much all last year until he finished 2nd at the Frys.com Open which secured his spot in the top 125 and allowed him to keep his PGA card.

He starts off the 2013 season at the Sony Open this weekend and will be playing his first two rounds with Boo Weekley and Graham DeLaet. Tee Times (http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/sony-open-in-hawaii/tee-times.html)

I consider myself a golf fan but having Jason playing last year really increased my interest in the game.

I hope he does well this year and finally gets a win.

Yep. 1st full field tourney of the year. Last year J got off to a quick start, disappeared for. 6 months, then turned it up at the end. It was an amazing parallel to his Nationwide Tour breakthrough year.

Here's hoping for a start that gives him the opportunity to play in the big Invitational events like The Memorial, etc.

Not a good start. He made the cut, but is +1, 18 shots of the lead after the third round.

True. He was going along nicely until he started his final 9 (the front) in the third round. He went +5 with a triple and 2 bogeys over 5 holes. Hope today is much better.

Jason is four under through 5 holes in LaQuinta. Good for a very, very, very, very early 11-way tie for 2nd.

And after another birdie on 6, he's in a two-way tie for first. With JUST 66 holes to play!

joe titan
01-17-2013, 02:37 PM
"in the hunt" for this event is around 25 under; a couple below par each round will not suffice.

GoMuskies
01-17-2013, 03:11 PM
6 under through 12, so he's still on a nice pace. One shot off the lead still. Mickelson is one over through 13.

He's now -7 (still one shot back) and about to play back to back par 5s. Here's his shot to go to bed tonight with the lead in a PGA Tour event.

Kokrak is in sole possession of first place after 15 holes at -9. I repeat, sole possession of first place.

There are still a few players on course, but Jason is finished and tied for the lead. Way to go, Jason!

Good news for Jason: Tiger and Rory both missed the cut in Abu Dhabi, so there will be no more coverage of the European Tour event here in the U.S. this weekend. Whatever media attention will be paid to golf this weekend will be focused on the Humana Event. It would be best if Mickelson makes the cut, though.

Jason finished with a 65 today for -22 overall. Looks like a top 10 (currently T8 with a handful of guys still out there). Projects to 37th on the FedEx Cup standings as of right now. Great weekend.

On to the Farmers next week. Tiger is playing there, so it will get quite a bit more attention than this tournament did.

21 birdies, 3 eagles and 5 bogies for the weekend.

The Fall Series this year will actually be the beginning of the 2014 PGA Tour season. That will begin October 10th of this year. The 2013 season ends the week after the PGA Championship in mid August. The Fed Ex Cup playoffs run from the end of August through September. I also attached a link explaining the new Q school format:

And I believe the top 125 on either the money list OR in FedEx cup points will earn the card for next year. Jason received 1 FedEx cup point previously for making the cut and 82 points for his performance this week. If it's like previous years, approx either $700K or 360 points are needed which means he would need a total of about five more 10th place finishes this year. It's hard to earn and keep your card. However, a 2nd place finish, like he had last year, helps big time and gets you more than 1/2 way there and a win would give him two years exempt status. Some details (http://www.pga.com/news/pga-tour/rules-2013-pga-tour-season-will-reward-consistency-over-hot-streaks).

He needs to work on his accuracy. He's 11th in driving distance, but 160th in driving accuracy, hitting only 50% of the fairways. He's also 120th in greens in regulation at 70%. Putting is pretty good at 28th, averaging 27.5 putts per round.

Not a good start for Jason in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. He had a bad 4 holes after the turn, going bogey, double, par, bogey, but finished +2, which puts him tied for 124th. Lets hope for a good round tomorrow.

Jason played the South Course on Thursday. The North Course is 3+ strokes easier on average. If he was 123rd and had the SC to play today, he might as well pack his bags. As it is, he's got a chance to make up a lot of ground if he has a good day.

The good news: Jason gets the weekend off.

The bad news: no paycheck.

Back injury could run from spasms to something serious. Every golfer deals with some sort of back issues. Let's hope it is just a minor muscle issue that can be worked out with massage and stretching.

GoMuskies

Apparently nothing serious at all. According to his hometown newspaper:

Warren native Jason Kokrak withdrew from Friday’s second round of the Farmers Insurance Open with a back injury.

Kokrak shot a 2-over 74 in Thursday’s first round at Torrey Pines. He shot a 38 on Friday’s front nine.

“Everything is OK,” Kokrak wrote in a text to The Vindicator. “Just strained something a bit.”

Kokrak said he is planning to play in next week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Jason's slide last year began at Honda and his first round this year was no improvement; he stands +2, will need at least 2 under tomorrow to survive the cut line.

joe titan
03-01-2013, 05:13 PM
Dason gave new meaning to the concept of triple/double as he posted one of each on his incoming nine and waste 5 birdies and fail to make the cut. He did however see how it's done as playing competitor Boo Weekley stands in third place at 7 under par for 36 holes.

Keep your head up and straighten out the tee ball.

Note that the Golf Channel's coverage starts at 4 ET. With Jason tied for the lead among golfers out of the course (second overall), he should get a lot of airtime if he can stick there. Of course, Mickelson who is 11 shots off the pace will probably rob some of his coverage, but this SHOULD be a great chance to see Kokrak play a few holes.

These announcers on NBC are driving me a bit nuts with their commentary on how unlikely this pairing is and that both players basically stink and are having the runs of their lives. OK, not quite so dramatic, but they're really working the angle of how these guys are both chasing their first real PGA Tour success.

paulxu
03-30-2013, 02:24 PM
If you go to the leaderboard on ESPN and click a players name, it drops down the player's score per hole for the round.

It also includes a picture for the player.

Jason has no picture; he's got one of those shadow figures that you see I guess in instant message programs.

His team needs to submit a photo to the PGA or something.

Edit: 2 guys shot -7 already today. Hope he can put together a good round.

Fed Ex is important, because it gets you into the "Playoffs" and the last 4 events if you can advance. That also builds up your money if you make cuts.

But, the money list is what determines who keeps their card. J finished 117 last year. The Top 125 are fully qualified and the next 25 are "conditionally qualified" for their card-which means that they have to wait for a spot to open up in events. Below 150 and you have no status for anything in the Big Show.

Gotta stay in the Top 125. Usually, about $750,000-$800,000 for the year is needed to stay at 125 or above. A couple of top 10's will cover it, even if he doesn't win.

Top 120 will get you into the FedEx Cup Playoffs; I believe it's Top 90 for the 2nd round, Top 75, for the 3rd round, and Top 30 for the Tour Championship.

sgarcia

He won't have to make that much this year because it's a shortened season. He'll probably only have to get to about $600k to keep his card.

When you go to ESPN's leaderboard over any weekend, it's getting old to just have a cut-out appear when you check his scores.

Brutal course that demands shaped shots, not pure Howitzer bombs. There is very little margin for error on the Stadium Course as far as missing the fairway is concerned. I know that statement can be made for virtually any PGA or USGA Tournament, but you have to play Sawgrass once to know what your eyes will be facing as you ponder every next shot.

What a victory it would be for him, though. And $1.7 million is not bad for 4 days work.

More likely he's spending the weekend catching up with family and friends instead of playing golf.

Jason was playing in a qualifier with 15 spots in the Open up for grabs. He shot 68-68, which is currently T6, so he's in excellent shape, but there are 10 guys tied for sixth. So I think there's at least the theoretical possibility that he could end up in something like an 11 way playoff for 10 spots. But he looks good to be headed for the U.S. Open.

My brothers and dad represented though and followed him all week along with Jay's dad. After his monster drive on 18, he crossed his arms in a Xavier X when he passed them. Not sure if TV caught that or not. Twas a cruel joke that the one weekend I'm out of town is during the AT&T, but at least it's back next year.

I gotta come over for that next year! Probably for a Thursday round.

Glad to hear that Tony is doing well.

Let me know, because if this year is any indication of next, I should have about 8 extra clubhouse tickets until Sunday. The blue course is a nice fit for Jay's game. Long, straight, US Open style course that caters nicely to his power draw without gimmicky greens. It wouldn't surprise me if he makes another serious push there next year, and in years after if the members decide to renew. They've got my vote but it's the old timers who vote in record numbers who may block it, in which case we'll probably see TPC Potomac next door, which is about a complete 180 stylistically but a very good course. It would be cool to have a good Xavier following there next year for him though. And thanks, Tony is doing a whole lot better!

He's already got 2 Top 10 finishes (Shell Houston Open and the Colonial Invitational) - more importantly today, he gets a big boost in terms of FedEx Cup points with a 3rd place finish. There are only about 10 events left before the playoffs - 2 of which are also going to have fewer points (since it's unlikely he'll be in the British Open or the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational).

With the HQ of Covelli in Youngstown, can he get a sponsor exemption? Or, is there no such thing because it's a WGC event? I mean a tour player, form the area should be a no-brainer.

Rather simple 4 under at Greenbriar but he will need to go lower to stay in serious contention by Sunday.

He hit 12 greens in reg, made 5 birdies against 1 bogey; so (assuming no 2 putt birdies) he one putted 5 times for birdies and one putted another 5 times to save par after missing the green. Flatstick is not the issue.

OTOH, hit 9 of 16 fairways (57%/ 130) might be able to improve on that phase.

Nope. No sponsors exemptions. The WGC events are limited to, I believe, the Top 60 in the World Golf rankings.

Jason having a solid showing at Greenbrier this week. He is at -5 going into the final round well off the lead, but good for another solid pay day if he shoots well tomorrow.

A very crowded leader board. It would be great tomorrow if he could post a low score to boost his check amount.

$20k and 24 more FedEx Cup points. Certainly not ideal, but not a wasted weekend either.

Andy Pope shot a -6 65 yesterday on the Web.com Tour event. As is the case, on that tour, however, you'd better keep making a lot of birdies.

He shot a -1 70 today to be -7 for the tournament, but is now tied for 21st....6 shots back of the leader.

They play some real pitch and putts on that Tour. The Wichita event is walking distance from my house, and that course would not be particularly challenging for someone who is good at golf.

It eats me up, of course.

I just got back from a visit with Doug Steiner at the new golf complex at Maketewah. The last time I saw it was in March. I don't know what to share here, except to note that this facility has exceeded anyone's dreams for it.

When I pulled up, Dave Bahr (Head Pro) and Doug were chipping outside. They're both ecstatic. I truly mean this and it's no exaggeration: the outdoor driving range area looks as tailored as Augusta. It's the first thing that truly strikes you, assuming you're into golf. Doug mentioned that Maketewah is putting new seed in throughout the course as the next step of its redevelopment. They've really brought this club back, and this Xavier partnership has helped with that; membership is about full-up again.

The facility speaks for itself; it's just stupid good.

Doug just landed another top recruit from the Pacific Basin. He was playing in Indy and Doug convinced him to come down to Cincy after he finished a tournament there to check out Xavier. He signed on site. We beat out Texas and Baylor and others for this kid! I think it's safe to say that we'll be following multiple Xavier alumni on the PGA Tour moving forward, which is why I share this here.

The women's team just landed the top recruit out of Ohio, beating Ohio State and others.

There isn't a team in the Big East that has anything remotely similar to this set-up.

BTW, if anyone is into platform tennis, a little drunken outing this winter after a basketball game is a must. We can build a fire in the outdoor fire pit that's built into the facility's patio, drink to stay warm, get a little exercise in on the two courts that they built as part of all this, and hopefully make snow angels if the weather cooperates (i.e. is sufficiently terrible to make it memorable).

7 birdies and 3 bogies made for a real roller coaster; leads in driving distance but hits fairways at a pace CJ Anderson can appreciate. Schedile is winding down for Fedex points.

ACE on the 4th...3 under after 4 on a day where the scores are very low so far. Jason is tied for 9th at the moment 6 behind the leader who has not started yet.

As it is now, Kokrak is 5 strokes behind the leaders at -11.

Although Jay did not have the kind of final round he wanted- a + 1 73- he still finished in a tie for 31st and made $30 large.

That cracks the $1 million in official money for him for the year. Damn good by any measure.

He continues to figure it out. Just a matter of time until he's kissing a trophy somewhere.

Jason was kind of all over the place today. 4 birdies, 2 bogeys and a double in an even par 70 round. He'll need to be a little better tomorrow to make the cut.

For what can only be termed a real hack job, Jason missed the cut after a Round 2 score of 3 over par, 73, including a fat 4 over par on his final 9. His scorecards for 2 days look more like a bag of Skittles. Given the circumstances of a course well suited or him and desperately needing to advance in Fedex points, he must be feeling some pain. He will absolutely need to resurrect his best play in order to advance in the playoffs and faces a very uphill battle.

For a little salt, UC grad Jim Herman stands 7 under, T4.

If you need a rooting interest, Jordan Speith graduated from Dallas Jesuit High.

Jason is in Group 28 tomorrow in his first ever playoff event in Jersey City. 1:17 tee time with James Driscoll and Bob Estes. Hopefully he can at least have a good enough showing to remain in the top 100 (currently 95th) and go to Boston for the Deutsche Bank Championship next weekend.

So you're saying he's probably a Cowboys fan, and we should all vehemently root against him?

This is one of the biggest weeks of Jay's young career. A strong tournament would go a long way, as he's obviously on the cusp. Here's to hoping he catches fire.

He posts a mundane 1 under par for round 1; had 3 birdies and an eagle but a poor ball striking day under 50% in hitting fairways and greens.

This is really a big event for Jay; he needs T20 or better to solidify his position for a deeper playoff run and cash some larger checks. He should finish round 2 on schedule but most of the field will not finish until Saturday morning.
