Crazy ass mofo. One of my favorite lefties of all time. Even when you didn't agree with him he could make you laugh and smile. And he just loved to piss people off.

He is one atheist that I would like to meet in heaven (and have a beer with). I am in talks with St. Peter to smuggle him in for good measure.

RIP Hitch.

A voice that wasn't afraid to offend has been silenced. RIP.

I'll admit that Hitchens had a sharp wit and could cut a man in half with a butter knife. At the same time, I never found him to be the intellectual heavyweight that so many others have. I read God is Not Great a few years back, and was struck not by the soundness of Hitchens' arguments, but rather by his bitterness. His arguments for atheism, rather, were the same recycled arguments we've heard since the earliest of Enlightenment atheism. His critique of religion, rather than offering anything new to the philosophical debate about the existence of God, only regurgitated previous arguments with a heavy does of bitter sarcasm and sanctimonious condemnation. To anyone enamored with Hitchens' writings, I would recommend There is a God by Antony Flew, who was a true intellectual and for most of his life, the world's foremost atheist.

Nevertheless, it's sad whenever someone dies. RIP Christopher Hitchens ...

I bet Roach wrote something bad. I will never know! Ignore list baby!

Hitchens was just too funny to take seriously. God loves you man, he really does. That's why He gave you cancer.

I'm joking Roach. Don't jump on me, even though I can't read what you will say anyway.

Hmm, well, I guess because DC Muskie is "ignoring" me and won't see my posts, I'm free to say whatever I want about him. He'll never read it!

So, what do I think of your post which speculates that I'd written something "bad" about Christopher Hitchens and which celebrates that you won't be seeing or reading my posts? To be blunt, it only adds more credence to my opinion that you behave like a petulant child whenever someone deigns to disagree with you or say something you dislike. In response, you ridicule, denigrate, and make sweeping assumptions about these individuals, irrespective of how little you know about them. You condemn them with vitriolic posts dripping with sanctimony, and if and when they reply to defend themselves, you "ignore" them, especially if they've demonstrated the absurdity of your posts. Having the "last word" is every bit as important to you as being "right".

So go ahead and "ignore" my posts. I won't care, because frankly, you've made it clear that there is no such thing as dialogue when someone undertakes to have any with you ...

I've followed Hitchens on TV and read his stuff since the 2000 presidential election. I am not sure if he and others who consider themselves atheist really are atheist. By nature humans are curious about from whence they came. That is innate and really part of the fiber of the soul. As Mortimer Adler suggests in How to Think About God God can exist metaphysically without being the caring and loving God that others of us believe exists via religious faith.

I happen to think that as intellectual as Hitchens was, that his curiosity led him to the fringes of a supernatural being of some sort. Because I believe that God is a loving and good God, that His Divine Mercy allows for Chris to have a place in Heaven, assuming he lived a good life.

Imagine the opposite surprise of an avowed terrorist who kills and commits suicide with the hope of reaching heaven and the surprise of Hitchens who did not believe in God and ends up seeing the face of Jesus and living in eternal bliss. I don't know, sometimes thinking like this just helps me stretch my mind a bit.

For the record I didn't even follow Hitches for the God stuff or that philosphical argument. I just always like to read his take on different current events because of his wit. He could cut to the bone.

Ditto. He was very intelligent and unafraid to speak his mind. I enjoyed listening to his commentary. Occasionally, I would pull up his Vanity Fair articles and give them a read, but mostly saw him on TV. I just brought the God angle up because it was part of the overall conversation.
