I know this is a longshot due to Xavier being Cincinnati based, but I also know there are some coastal guys on here. This summer I really committed to surfing as my physical hobby. Quite simply, it has changed my life and I am obsessed. I was curious if anybody else here surfed, or has even tried it while on vacation. Massive massive high when you catch your first wave, and especially as you get better and you start to get yourself into the barrell. I know there are some Jax guys here, and I am usually at the Poles or the Pier. Would love to meet up if any of the Jax guys are novice rippers.

If anybody here who enjoys water is ever in the Jacksonville area on vacation and would like to try it give me a shout and I will set you up with a smokin hot pair of girls who will get you on a wave on your first lesson. If it's not a bucket list thing--It should be. I compare it to drag racing adrenaline wise. Just make sure your in decent shape.

My kids pretty much grew up at the Inlet on New Smyrna Beach. Oldest was Captain of the surf team @ Flagler College. Has lived in Huntington Beach now for the last 15+ yrs. and surfs nearly everyday. Has done well in the City Tournament there the last few years. Regular surfers are in fabulous shape. If you ever get out that way (all surfers eventually do) PM me and I'll set up a tour of the hot spots.

Does the St. Augustine Record cover the surf team? My bro is a sportswriter there, and I would love to see the look on his face if he was dispatched to the Flagler College surf competition.

Bobbie, that is too cool. I am nowhere near ready to paddle out to the lineup at the inlet yet, but that is kind of the holy land down here so eventually it will happen. I know there are occasional dickhead surfers, but I have had a great experience. I think the culture really gets a BS Rep.

I'm guessing your boys were shortboarders?

I can't surf. At least I don't believe you want to witness any attempt of me trying that.

But I can cheer you guys on in person and drink with you afterwards if you line anything up for Jacksonville/St. Aug.

I guess they do from time to time:

Yes. The older one is a very good surfer (never heard this from him but from friends and other people) . When he was @ Flagler he lived on the beach all 4 yrs. with 6 other buddies. Now he lives a block off the beach in HB. The younger one just keeps up with it periodically due to job responsibilities out of town.

How about we meet up and partake in some brews after I finish up and watch some Xavier games in a bar this winter. It is nice to be near a major city so I can chill with some fans.

I surfed once in Hawaii. It was fun but I wasn't good enough to get an adrenaline rush out of it.

I had a better time walking around with my surfboard under my arm, checking out the surfer dudettes and grabbing a beer in my wet suit and bragging about how I just "ripped through that gnarly barrel" when, in reality, nothing any of us actually did could even be faintly described in such terms.

SHB, if you are ever out San Diego way, my much younger bro surfs out of Encinitas -- Stone Steps, and I will be glad to connect you. You need a wet suit and have to share the surf with the dolphins and the occasional whale, but a totally classic surfer town with at least one good surf shop. Like you he was a fanatic early, would go to Lake Mich for 4 foot waves in high school.

He also writes a killer food column for the North Coast News, Lick the Plate, and knows where the best fish tacos in SoCal can be had.
