Person of Interest Season IV is supposed to be on Netflix today. This show is great and, unfortunately, probably more accurate than it should be.

What are everyone's thoughts on Making a Murderer?
Spoiler Alert.
I believe Avery is guilty, but the police also planted evidence to bolster their case. I've seen multiples sources state that key evidence was not discussed during the docu-series, such as Teresa's Palm Pilot being found in the burn pit.
I also think Dassey is guilty, to some degree. But his case handling might be the most egregious portion of the series.
If not those two, Scott Tadych and Bobby Dassey are guilty, as they were present and alibied each other.

I saw a list of what is rolling off of netflix in January and what is rolling on. It's a big net loss. I know the new model is making their own content, but part of the value is the library, and the library is getting weaker.

I watched a couple of the Master Of None episodes. Love it. I do admit that I've been an Aziz Ansari fan for a long time, but it's just a great, great show. For what I've seen.

Then legally, he's not guilty. As a lawyer, I watched half of that documentary with my jaw on the ground. The 85 conviction was bad enough...but the way that case was handled in 2005 was incomprehensible. Executing an 8 day search warrant and barring them from their property the entire time? That's an appearance of impropriety in and of itself. What those police did to that 16 year old kid was beyond repugnant. I could have never found Avery guilty beyond a reasonable doubt...but the real tragedy (obviously also the death of a young woman) is how Branden was treated. The force feeding of his "confession" was deplorable. His original attorney was just as culpable in the whole thing. Just hard to wrap my head around the fact that this occurred less than 10 years ago.

Never did crim law, but agree. Hoy shit, the nephew s new attorney just conceded his guilt publicly. Smiling in the courthouse as the cameras role. Way over his head. Haven't got to the trial yet.
Messy, like Serial, but more involving with all the video.
Props to the producers, to stick with a case that long is a documentary marathon.

I can understand Adnan being found guilty...but the police corruption in MAM was off the charts. That county sheriff's department should have never EVER been involved in the investigation. Let alone the local deputy who found the key in the house after 7 days of searching and it was never found. And the Calumet deputy admitted that he wasn't keeping an eye on the deputies during the search. After Calumet County sheriff said the local sheriff's would not be involved with searching the property. One of the things least discussed? What the hell were those two juries doing? Good Lord. After watching the "confession" video of Branden, if I was the judge, I would have put a stop to those proceedings. Disgusting.
The other odd thing is that in the Avery trial, the first jury vote was 7 not guilty. It's crazy to think 7 people changed their mind and sent a guy to prison for life.

Thanks for the clarification regarding guilty. What I was trying to convey is that I believe Avery committed the crime.
There are a lot of good articles out there discussing the items that were omitted. If you can recall the attractive, female reporter with the glasses - she's actually now a reporter for WKRC - she indicated on her Twitter that some glaring evidence wasn't discussed.
The whole conflict of interest aspect did blow me out of the water.
I think a lot of it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. The series was so incredibly biased, but I can understand why, it wouldn't be nearly as entertaining if the other side of the story was more heavily focused.
It was a tough pill to swallow, but it became somewhat more palatable once you start digging into everything that was left out.

Nothing I've read has come close to overcoming the inherent flaws in the investigation in this case. You can be as condescending as you wish, the entire investigation was a legal abomination.

Wasn't trying to be condescending. And I think you're right to an extent. But I also think it's tough to make statements such as that without completely knowing the entire case, and watching a biased documentary.
And I agree with one of your points before - I believe the grave injustice occurred on the B. Dassey side.
Have any thoughts on who committed the murder?

Just finished a few minutes ago. I agree with everything you wrote here. Wow, just wow, especially the Dassey conviction on only his "confession" and no physical evidence. Why does it seem the system is set up to get a conviction and not to get it right beyond a reasonable doubt? How is Dassey's first court appointed lawyer allowed to keep practicing law? Why did the judge rule he needed a new attorney because of the mistakes/neglect of that attorney yet allow the results of that neglect to be used? Dassey's only consistent statements/story throughout all that time is when he tells that he went home after school and did not go over to Avery's until the bonfire.

Yes, how do 7 go from not guilty to guilty beyond reasonable doubt?
Another question, why do we leave the fate of a person's future up to 12 "peers"? Why do people (presumably) uneducated people, with regards to the law, decide someone's guilt or innocence? Why isnt it a panel of judges? Too expensive? Not enough judges? It is so confusing to me. This isnt these people's jobs, by the end of it they just want to leave and go home back to normal life. That is a lot of responsibility that seems like fatigue plays a big art in hurrying a decision. Crazy.

Following post is complete spoiler- though if you read through the thread you already know.
I think its tough to watch the series and say 100% he was guilty or wasn't. A lot of evidence was left out of the documentary but there was a lot of odd stuff from the prosecution.
The big things that have me questioning: The Key (which apparently didn't have the girls DNA on it but had SA's? Interesting) and the officer who called and asked about the license plate, and the 7 who originally thought not guilty right away.
Key points I found not in the documentary: SA sweat was on the hood of the car, also. His nephew helped clean the garage shortly after and came home with bleach stained pants (Though, I find it hard to believe they could clean everything in the garage and house). He called the company the girl worked for and specifically requested her. He wrote many letters to his wife about how he hated her and wanted to kill her- he actually also said in Easter cards to his kids that he was going to kill there mom. Crazy, though apparently they had a love hate relationship like this.
Couple things I don't believe the judge allowed: He told other inmates when he left he was going to rape and murder girls and explained how he would do it. The girl complained to other workers about him being weird and one time she went he answered the door in only a towel.
If you are interested- I really found most of this on the reddit forum, head there if you really enjoyed the series and want to keep talking about it. Regardless, there seemed to be a lot of shotty stuff from the prosecution. I think its conceivable to believe SA did kill her and at the same time police planted some evidence to help the case. Ultimately, I think there was a lack of evidence to find him guilty, but really cant tell because we didn't get the whole story.

This could take a few years, got time?
Trial by jury was negotiated initially by nobles sick of the "Kings justice." Evolved over centuries to protect us, all of us, from hangin or merely "tough on crime" judges, more often than not former prosecutors.
Jurors, presumably untainted by too much cynicism and presumably neutral, offset the power of the King, or now, the state.
The defendant can always waive trial by jury, but (s)he gets to choose, not the state or the prosecutor.
Juries go amiss, but often get it right with the evidence they do get. The critical person is the judge, his wisdom, knowledge and judgment on what evidence to allow, what to block.

just finished making a murderer...not sure if avery is guilty or not...its definitely possible that he is. However, based on the evidence, I don't know how its possible that he was convicted. To me, there is plenty of reasonable doubt.
I feel bad for Brendan...the kid obviously has disabilities and its pretty sickening what the investigators did. It was an abomination. I really don't know how those investigators sleep at night. Maybe they are psychopaths.

Adnan Syed was granted a new trial too. No way he can be convicted with Jay's inconsistent statements and today's technology completely tearing apart the cell phone data used to convict him. I believe Dassey is innocent and Adnan and Avery are not guilty. There is a difference between those two.

How ironic! My wife and I saw the first two episodes of "Goliath" last night also and really liked it. Billy Bob has always been one of my favorites ("Sling Blade," "Monster's Ball," and "Fargo" are among my three favorite BBT performances. But I must admit that the " complete" presence of Halle Berry in "Monster's Ball" was a huge contributing factor in my enjoyment of that film. I would have to think that Billy Bob enjoyed her participation in the production of that film as well!
Mascots just up on Netflix. I'm not sure how many (more) times Guest can sustain the Guffman//Best in Show format, but this was worth some Friday night laughs. Good zingers and skewers early, the ending is lame.

Finally saw Fleabag on Amazon Prime. Holy shit. Hilarious. Must watch. The lead actress is absolutely hilarious. She also writes the show. She also wrote Killing Eve, which I haven't seen, but have heard is very good. For Fleabag, think Curb Your Enthusiasm mixed with the British version of The Office. Really easy to watch. Two seasons with 6 episodes. Each episode is 25 minutes. Easy to binge. Can't recommend enough. It's a women's show, but it transcends. Couldn't stop watching. Won best comedy, best actress and best writer last year at Emmy's. Will likely sweep again this year as second season is better than first. It's definitely quirky, but so worth a watch. Pretty confident saying most here will be hooked within first 10 minutes of the first episode.

With this pandemic and the crappy weather (in Ohio), I thought this thread deserved a bump. Let's share some knowledge while we are all sitting at home. If the weather doesn't get better soon, I fear I will have watched everything on Netflix and Prime. I have watched 3 seasons of hour long shows since Saturday. Narcos Mexico Season 2 (excellent), Locke & Key (very entertaining) and Hunters (enjoyed it too).
Think I'm going to try Devs on Hulu next.
Recommendations until Ozark comes out next week?
P.s. For anyone who thinks I should grab a book until the weather turns, I read all day at work...

Yes, definitely. As Caf stated in his post, it is about private zoo owners. The main character is a former presidential candidate, governor candidate, and a gay polygamist (who knew there was such a thing) who is crazy AF. I found it fascinating. It's not bad, it's just too long. I liked it because I did my senior thesis on the Teamsters and organized crime, so I was interested in their take. It was pretty accurate. The Mob used the Teamsters pension fund as a bank. As a side note, a relative of my wife recently found out his Teamster pension has been cut in half. Two rwcommendations....
1.) For pure entertainment value, Cobra Kai...if you liked karate kid at all, you will love this series.
2.) If you would like to scre the shit out of yourself, watch the documentary, The Social Experiment. Basically, it explains how social media, along with google, manipulate our feelings and thought patterns. I have read quite a bit about the big four and social media and quite frankly for some of the good that it has done, I think society would be way better off without social media.

We watched "I'm Thinking of Ending Things", Charlie Kaufman's latest film, last night on Netflix. It probably shouldn't be watched by anyone under 60 years old. It is depressing and exhilarating at the same time, and is the usual Kaufman mind-bender.

Tried it for about 20 minutes. Way too going nowhere for my taste. Maybe I'll give it another try. After all I didn't watch the Sporanos at first, because I couldn't stand Tony's mom.

I don't know if it's the same documentary Xville referred to, but I watched A Social Dilemma on Netflix. Really eye opening, and quite frankly, terrifying. Made me want to throw my kids' IPhones in the trash and buy them flip phones. I don't do any social media apps, but if I was on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram or TikTok, I'd be deleting them immediately. I had no idea how deeply manipulating those sites are.

Not Netflix...Apple TV. Ted Lasso. Can’t recommend enough. Great writing and acting. Pencil in Jason Sudekis for a best comic actor nomination.

I’ve been on a binge streak these last couple weeks…not sure why…maybe it’s the weather…but I’ve watched some pretty entertaining series. All on Netflix.
Squid Game — very entertaining and binge worthy. Most here have probably already seen it. I was late to the game on it. If you can, I would watch it in a Korean and do English subtitles. The dubbing is brutal.
Midnight Mass — starts a little slow, but I liked it. Interesting premise. May not be everyone’s cup of tea.
Archive 81 — I liked this one very much. Another unique story.
Hellbound — I’m 4 episodes into this 6 episode series. Whoa!! I have no idea what the hell is going on…but it’s crazy. Another Korean show.

Yeah 'ville,
This is spot on. The 1st season was freaking great, but they were not able to come close in the following seasons. The whole thing is geared toward an under 18 audience. I managed to complete it, but the writing is just silly most of the time and it's was VERY difficult to finish it out because of that. Most of the young cast will struggle to do anything other than a Domino's commercial.
NOW, if you want to see what I consider the very best in this particular genre..... It's LEGION, hands down! It's the MCU on an acid trip with Pink Floyd in the back seat. The young actors here are simply in another stratosphere.

I ashamedly breezed thru the second season already :) . It was ok… the introduction of max and her brother was weird and not really needed, and thought the ‘sister’ storyline was also kind of stupid, though I’m assuming that isn’t over. I was impressed with the character, will’s acting, but yeah overall the second season was a large letdown from the first.
different genre but just thought of it due to the kid actor concept, yellow jackets was absolutely fantastic… can’t wait for that next season to arrive.

Yeah…watched the entire season in 3 days. I enjoyed it. Elements of First Blood later in the season. I’m a Pratt fan…and he is very good in his role. I try not to be too discerning about what critics say. And agree with noteeggs…it was entertaining.
On a side note…I have an 18, 16 and 14 year old. It’s hard to find something we can all watch. Our family really enjoyed watching Only Murders In The Building. Kids didn’t get any of the references Martin and Short were making…but they thought they were both hilarious. If you have teenagers, I would recommend it. There is some language…but that doesn’t personally bother me that much.

Just finished The Bear on Hulu. If you are a foodie, do it. Didn’t know anyone in the cast except Oliver Platt and John Berethal. And they had limited roles. But I thoroughly enjoyed season 1.
Loved the Bear, but it is one of those shows where it is at an 11 the entire time.

Definitely agree. My son watched the first episode and liked it, but said, “lots of yelling.”
I watched the Manti Teo documentary. It’s good. Made me feel uncomfortable and just awful for Manti. He may have been naive…but it shouldn’t have cost him everything he lost (millions of dollars). The media should be ashamed of themselves for how they handled that situation.

Mr. InBetween on Hulu is incredible. Just finished the first season. Can’t believe I’ve never heard of this show. There are 3 seasons. Can’t wait to start Season 2 soon. Australian show…so may need captions to catch everything. My advice? Don’t even look up what it’s about. Go in blind. Wife and I did and we both love it.
Also started The Patient on Hulu. Only 2 episodes so far. Steve Carrell. So far, very good.

Watched all quiet on the western front last night. In a word, outstanding. It was extremely powerful to the point that I was almost physically sick after watching it, but just incredible all around. I know there are a lot of war movies out there but I think this one and 1917 are two of the absolute best.

We look forward to a new episode every week now, but that’s not enough. We went back to the beginning to have more to binge. There is one odd and dark episode that seemed out of character, but we really enjoy the show.
We recently got into Shrinking, but I think we’ve blown thru all the episodes available.

I thought Chimp Empire on Netflix was fascinating. It’s a docuseries about a civil war between two rival tribes of chimps in Uganda. It has been going on since 1993. The politics, hierarchy and grudges that define chimp communities was eye opening.
In full disclosure, my wife thought it was boring. She probably would have liked it better if it was a chimp dating show. Might be a candidate for a solo watch.

Agreed!! 6 years/seasons of the show and I don't recall much of a lull in the action. Some shows have side stories that take up episodes and seem to go nowhere. I liked binging it, made it easier to follow the characters and the various storylines. I read on IMBD that Snowfall was considered a prologue to Boys N The Hood. The music, fashion, cars, were all true to the early 80's when the show was set.
This show should have been more widely acclaimed. If it was acclaimed, I missed it. My wife is big on Instagram and podcasts. She finds some great diamonds in the rough for us to watch. Snowfall was one of her better finds.

Most recently I have been watching Beef on Netflix (dark comedy), Fatal Attraction on Paramount Plus, and Jury Duty on Amazon Prime.
Beef was really good, just one season, and only 30 minute episodes.
Fatal Attraction loosely follows the movie, bounces around, can be tough to follow, but has been very good.
Jury Duty is a reality show about a jury and court proceedings, but all the folks in the show are actors except for one person. The one person is not in on the joke, and the hijinks played on him are hilarious. If you have seen the Joe Schmo show, it is very similar to that.

It’s all fun and games until YOU are the chimp pushed into his locker before lunch and they don’t hear you banging to get out until the 5th period!
I’m sorry, that might have been a flashback…..
I’m probably with your with on this one, but I can see how it could be fascinating.

Netflix does a fantastic job on sports related series. I am currently watching "Quarterback" produced by Peyton Manning. It followed 3 NFL QB's for the entire football season in 2022- Kirk Cousins, Pat MaHommes, and Marcus Mariota. I am on episode 3 and it is great content. While I am not a huge fan of Pat MaHommes the person, this docuseries shows how ridiculously talented he is.
I have watched their golf show "Full Swing" and the tennis show "Break Point".
I don't even see PMThor on Twitter any more. XUFan09 and LAMuskie are regular contributors to the 247 board if you are jonesing to read their prose.

It's pretty entertaining. As a former "biglaw" lawyer, some of the ridiculous depiction of law firm life is pretty hard to get past, but as long as you can get past that (or if you never spent any time in a law firm you won't give a shit that it's completely unrealistic) it's pretty solid.

Yeah, you can put me in the category of never spent time in a law firm and don’t give a shit lol. Curious though, are there actually firms out there that only hire alumni? Or is that more BS for the story line?

Funny, I watched first two after Tuesday’s game and third last night. Really liked the way it was produced. Highly recommend, but yeah disturbing.
Haven't watched American Nightmare yet, but on a Netflix note has anyone else switched to their $6.99 plan with ads ? We decided a couple months ago that $20 a month for Netflix was too pricey, and opted for the $6.99 plan. So far, so good. Yes it has ads but most are very short, and we're willing to put up with it to save $150 a year. And it means we can watch Masters of the Air, The Morning Show, and some other stuff on Apple TV for a couple months, or maybe longer. We did the same with HBO, opting for the yearly with ads plan for $69.

I saw American Nightmare. The whole show I told my wife stories told to me by a best friend of mine who works in a capacity for public defense. He has told me countless stories about detectives who get an idea in their head who committed the crime and toss out all other possibilities and only look for evidence that supports their target. The rest in his area all see the same stuff. Watching that on Netflix, I saw a lot of the same from those police. They had in their head it was Gone Girl from the start.
