Since it is now officially the slow, slow off-season, I figured we could keep a rolling thread of all the obnoxious douche bags that find their way onto the internet. I will start with today's nomination. This guy was caught at a Ranger's game last night:

http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports-sentinel-sports-now/2011/04/06/texas-rangers-groom-tells-fox-wedding-worst-day-of-his-life-video/

The best part of it all, apparently the Rangers have no record of plans for their wedding at the ballpark, which was supposed to be today.

OK, full disclosure- this was stolen from the Bob & Tom website. It was too good to pass up, though. It was taken from their collection of bad album covers:

It's official.

THE D-Bag of the day today, is the official that reffed the lacrosse game I coached in last night.

We were down 3 the whole game, and in a 20 second period with a shade over two minutes left, we score twice, quickly. Now we're down one.

On the face off, the ref stops them and said that both players jumped early, to which I yelled out with a smile on my face "Well one of them had to do it first!" My staff and players laughed, the second official laughed, and the coaching staff from the other team laughed. But funny isn't tolerated on a lacrosse field, and the official threw a flag on me for saying that. Then I said, "Sir! I was joking! I'm sorry, I didnt..." Got a SECOND flag.

So we went down TWO players in the final TWO minutes of the game for a joke and an apology. We lost by one.

After the game, the head coach of the program (I run the B team, he runs the A), tried to "clear the air" with him as the official sought him out. The official then ejected my coach from the game...AFTER THE GAME. He laughed and said that he'd be suspended for two games.

We're lucky that the opposing coach is a current member on the SW Ohio Lacrosse Board, and he said he'd go to bat for us and that my guy wouldn't have a suspension.

The best part about it, on a side note, was that the players from our opponents came up to me after the game separately from the post-game hand shake, and apologized for the "crappy official" and shook my hand. Good kids.

In the end, THIS official is today's D-Bag of the Day.

No offense man, but after reading that, I nominate you as D-Bag of the Day.

It's just a league game. :D

I'm a D-bag, no doubt about it. Asshole. :D

It was weird though. i know the official and my fellow coach didn't get along (last time we had him three weeks ago, one of our players got popped int he head and he got pissed at us for asking for a call or something. He said our player wasn't hit... well, he's still out after a concussion on that play). Him and I did though...at least I thought. I'm not a yeller, I don't curse, and being an official in the past I try to offer them as much respect as possible.

Him ejecting the coach though...AFTER the game results in a two game suspension (which should get over-turned), but he did it without merit.

For the record, I also told my team that I'd take them out for milkshakes since I had an impact on that game.

Haha,

My singature hopefully will never have to change. I won't do Firehose wrong like that.

Last year, I took our whole program out, started a tab of sorts at Hyde Park Graeters, and basically hung around while my roommate (a part-time manager there) made milkshakes for every one of my players that came in. After this debacle (which it turns out, we're getting a lot of support from the SWO Lacrosse Board and our opponent that day), the milkshake day is in the works once again.

It's a good thing to do for the kids and it's my way of thanking them for their hard work and getting to see them outside of a lacrosse situation. They are kids after all and deserve to have fun more often than not. :D

I suppose this should be in the Pet Peeve Thread, but the subject matter seems to make this the right thread.

Upon further review

The head coach/manager speaks for the team to the officials during almost any sort of officiated game.
The assistant coaches support the head coach by following the lead of the head coach.
Assistants speaking out directly to an official, "jest" or otherwise, at a critical juncture of any game, usually a bad idea.
An assistant coach speaking out directly to an official at a critical juncture, knowing in advance that the official and the head coach are not on good terms, really bad idea.
Amateur sports officials are essential to amateur sports.
Amateur sports officials make errors in judgment, and like most of us don't like to be second-guessed.
Second guessing an amateur sports official in a public way, loud enough for the official and others to hear, not a good idea.
Accepting that mistakes will be made and not insisting on embarassing someone who makes a mistake, good idea.

Some sports have an etiquette between coaches, players and officials that is quite different from college basketball. Although I watched collegiate lacrosse at Maryland and Johns Hopkins while in grad school in the DC area, I don't profess to be an expert in lacrosse etiquette towards officials. However, the long term good of any amateur sport is IHMO best served by not ragging on refs for perceived bad calls. Accepting that judgment and perception can be substandard -- or simply different -- at any particular moment, and not having a public bout of apoplexy, seems the better way to go.

We have an A and a B team. It was a B game where I am the head coach. The A coach helps me out during these games, considering all I have is a dad who likes to do stats (something that is appreciated and gives him something to do).

My personal history with the official seemed just fine. We got along, chatted it up, and during the previous game, told me he liked listening to our huddle at time outs since he liked our kids and found myself and the team rather amusing. I made comments in jest throughout the game. He was a first-time official, to which during the first quarter of the A game, I approached him and the other official, and informed them of a couple of rules that were overlooked. They were minor and I try to say such things with complete respect.

The rules were that they need to let the goalie have a chance to get back in net before re-starting play, after he chases after a shot.

The other is when there is a flag down, the team with the ball who had the violation committed on, cannot leave the restraining box without the whistle being blown.

Minor calls to which they thanked me and apologized for missing. I thanked them for acknowledging that and for doing a good job so far.

However, I was the head coach in this situation. The flag he threw was unwarranted towards me. We just had a tournament this weekend in Middletown where the officials we knew heard about it and told me that the call was BS. We have a reputation for being pretty easy going coaches amongst officials. We joke with them more often than not and it's a reputation that I enjoy having.

More so, during the A game (which was previous to the B game), there was no issue to worry about. The official didn't have a problem with us nor did he communicate such.

The official, IMO, needs to learn to eliminate emotions. We were no riding either of them nor was I upset or complaining throughout. Even during the first flag, I tried to apologize and explain it was in jest, and he wouldn't have any of it. I was nothing but polite to him up until that second flag.

Of course, I'm also biased towards my own actions. :D

Also, to put an ending to the story, we requested that the official no longer works our games. We truly felt that his biased nature towards us (how could there not be anymore?) would risk further (for lack of a better word) "tampering" with how the game is played between our team and another, and which would further risk injury among players. The head coach of our program sat out two games Saturday on his own accord, but we're still asking the league to review the situation. We have over-whelming evidence between our two stories and the opposing team's accounts of the actions, that clearly show the official in question is out of line. The calls he let go during play, and the calls he made outside of it, not only cost us a game, but more importantly, it resulted in a month long injury to one of our kids. There's no excuse for that, period.

Props to the judge for giving him a harsh sentence. 18 years is a long time. Definitely well deserved in this case.

I am the official douchebag of the day.

Odd that this thread was near the top of recent threads when I jumped on here.

So some co-workers, one of their girlfriends, and I went to Molly Malone's for a meal and some drinks after work today. I moved to a different seat, which happened to be next to my buddy's girlfriend while he was up taking a cig with the other co-worker.

Jamie (we'll call the girlfriend) and Abby (we'll call the other co-worker) were left with me. When the two guys returned from making out over a cigarette, my friend was like, "Why did you take my seat?"

Naturally, as if to give him shit, I responded, well, she's better looking than you and you.

I pointed to the two guys, and began to point at Abby as well. Abby is an awesome gal, and not terrible looking by any means. But the girlfriend is considerably better looking. I didn't mean to put Abby down, and not even cognoscente of doing it until it was too late. Abby called me out for it and was visibly upset afterwards.

As big of an asshole as I am, I do take pride in the fact that I try not to put people down for things that are 1) out of their control or 2) a sensitive topic. I hit both on the head without even trying.

So there ya have it. I AM A DOUCHEBAG.

For the record, been sick to my stomach ever since. I feel awful. I am a true prick. I couldn't apologize , and boy did I try.

Don't beat yourself up over it too much, Titan. We've all been there before. After the embarrassment dies on your end- and the hurt on hers- you'll both have something to laugh about.

I remember one funny exchange between my brother and a couple of hippy-ish chicks at a party. He called one of the girls a "trailey chick" and she overheard, thinking he called her a "trailer chick". She immediately called him out on it (in a joking sort of way) and in his stumbling attempt to dig out of the hole he made himself he says, "I didn't call you a trailer chick, but if I had you'd be a double-wide." (thinking that he was paying her a compliment because everyone knows double-wide's are the height of luxury in the trailer park).

That was when she really blew up.
