You have about ten minutes to give me your total rep point total if you want to improve your chances at a better seed. The 1 seeds will be revealed at 4:30. Brackets hopefully revealed before 5. (Eastern time.)

Michigan Muskie has this down - always leave your audience wanting more.

Too bad the real Selection Committee can't just say, "uh, we're not ready yet. Call us at 8:00 when 60 Minutes is over."

Buck Futler
02-13-2011, 03:40 PM
I need no rep point total. Buck Futler should skate by as an at-large in the SWAC conference.

I've worked by rear end off this year, sir. I am waiting around my computer screen clicking refresh waiting on the opportunity that only comes around once a year.

I will be greatly disappointed if Buck doesn't squeak into a #16 play-in game. With a full green rep bar at only 13 posts, Buck Futler deserves this one.

Total: 3959 rep points

I'm pretty sure this is entirely an at-large field, Buck. There's no conference of Popes, no conference of virgins, I can go on and on and on.

My total points and overall ranked have increased since Friday, but I'll do the honorable thing and remain locked into what a posted then.

I fear none. I eat the young of all who stand in my way. I play for keeps. Bring it on.

Boy the committee has really taken a grandstand against rep whoring with these seeds.

vee4xu
02-13-2011, 04:39 PM
Grandstand is the wrong term in my opinion. If MM really did make adjustments for rep whoring, it is not grandstanding, but rather adjusting the comps to the subject. No big deal there. Just legitimate business sense by a good mind.

Rep index is weighted more than rep point total. That sort of accounts for whoring, but not entirely since the system is still mostly objective. (It's not entirely objective because the weight factors were ultimately decided by The Selection Committee.)

A 12 seed for my first showing, but I have kyxu. Thats rough, I mean hr posts real insightful thought provoking post. Contrast to the useless drivel and homer posts I make. I do have a record of getting xaviet news brought here to the forums pretty quickly. And I participate in live chats.

Chicago, IL.

Sitting in his recliner with an ice-cold Goose Island Winter Mild Winter Ale, Lucho anxiously awaited the announcements of Selection Sunday.

"To tell you the truth, I'll just be happy to be selected," said the 24 year old posting phenom with a signature smile beaming across his face. "There is seriously some great talent out there and it would be a great honor to compete against them."

Lucho joined the XavierHoops board in February of last year. After a lackluster beginning to his career, Lucho decided that if he wanted to join the top echelons of the XH community he would have to work on his game. Over the summer Lucho put in a lot of work, but, as young posters are prone to do, he couldn't keep up with the frenetic pace. In September his posts per day fell to a career low .67. He was devastated.

"I just didn't feel focused. I felt the game slipping through the [key]board. I had to do something."

It was shortly after that Xavier began their basketball season and Lucho began seeing increased production from his posts. His overall posting had gone up and his reputation was steadily climbing. It didn't take long for the young man to earn a reputation beyond repute and his posts per day now stand at a career high 1.15.

Lucho, now stands as a 9 seed in the East region, facing #8 xu95 in the always brutal 8-9 matchup. "I think 95 is a great poster. I think he's got quality stuff and it's going to take some hard work to beat him, but I'm looking forward to it. I just got to stick to what I know."

Always with his signature smile Lucho takes a sip of his beer as the debonair law student reflects on his forthcoming matchup. "Like I said I'm just happy to be a part of it, but don't be surprised if I turn a few heads while I'm at it."

I feel a strange bond to Boozehound, Coasterville 95 and Strangebrew as we are 12 seeds. Historically, the #5 vs. #12 match-up has produced a significant number of upsets with the #12 seed winning 33% of the time.

I think we can pull at least 2 upsets or even make it like 2009 where 3 #12's moved on.

Good luck boys.

I have to say, I wasn't expecting a one seed but I'll take it. Pimp in the first round is hardly a reward for earning a top spot though, and I will not take this matchup lightly. A Titan or Glow second round will also be really tough. I will either have to go through the beard or go through the man I admire most on this board, due to his closeness with so many hot girls. Should be a distracting second round. To top it off, I'm in a bracket with the king of the photoshop, the great Nuts, and the head coach of Xavier basketball. The winner of this bracket will be battle tested.

But at the end of the day, I believe in my posting abilities to take me to the next level.

I think this is the one where SixFig is the top seed, correct?

This is not the soft region that people think. Snipe is clearly underseeded as a 3 here; we all know that he's the North favorite to go to the Final 4, but this is a deep field. SixFig is the top overall poster on the S-Curve, no question. Xpectations is another sleeper for the overall title contender. And let's not forget out-of-towners like Wags and Paul who always carry the load and often exceed the seed.

We know what xuab is capable of every time Chris Mack has a show (or doesn't have a show). Brew is grossly underseeded as a 15, and you can rest assured he'll be well prepared for his opener against Xpectations. xu95 is another old guard poster that can't be overlooked should he make it to round 2.

As for me, I only hope I can follow the path of another 7 seed back in 2004. They faced deficits of 14 points, 11 points, and 8 points in all their games before finishing The Run.

STLXUFan would be a worthy 1st round opponent. Xpectations and Snipe are legends in their own mind but certainly beatable.

Coach Mack is riding one very big win into the tournament. His SOS is off the charts, but the rest of his season it seemed he didn't show up. Not only is he beatable, but you'll make a shitload of enemies on the board if you take him down.

Kind of a no win for Juice here. The Committee apologizes.

I discovered how to allow everyone to make picks online. Yes, that means there can be gambling on this dumb game.

This way, even if you get knocked out of the tournament, you can still be in the tournament. Be sure to pick with your brain and not with your ego.

To make your XH Madness tournament bracket selections, go here:

XH Madness Picks (http://www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=387645)

INSTRUCTIONS:
You should see links to both the Big Dance and NIT brackets. The ability to predict winners is enabled on each bracket. Once you select a bracket, look for a link in the upper left corner that says "Predict It!" (it must be very exciting.) Click on that and make your first round picks. Then click ENTER, and repeat the process for your second round picks.

I will set a deadline based on the level of interest and participation in predicting the winners. The individual matchups will not be simulated until this deadline has passed.

Pick away!

Too fun. On the one hand I'm not terribly excited about my prospects as an 11 seed. On the other hand, there are many esteemed posters seeded lower so I will not complain. Frankly, I'm stunned my reputation is high enough to warrant a seeding at all. It's clear I spend entirely too much time hanging out on this site. It's also clear I need to work very hard to increase my rep so I can get a higher seed next year.

I don't understand it either. It's just going to happen.

That could be a very, VERY bad idea.

It's explained in another thread. No, we don't need to do anything. Based on the historical win % by the various seeds and a random number generation program, we'll advance through the bracket.

Michigan Muskie, do you realize the monster you've created here? Rep-whorage will be epidemic.

Yeah. You might need to let someone else generate the 'random' number for our first round match-ups. Can we trust you not to rig the outcome just to increase your ratings?

Excellent! I'll sell tickets, they'll be free haircuts in the stands, and someone (probably Nigel or PMI) will set the line on this one. I'm anxious to see the over/under.

Are you qualified to give the kind of haircuts the men on this site have come to expect? I'm not sure male cleavage is what they have in mind, even if you are so endowed

And I'm sorry but I'm a married woman and there will be no over/under between Lady Muskie and myself. Being a lady herself, I'm sure she would agree.

Good to know, although around my house we refer to it a boobilage. They don't become breasticles until they can be tucked into the waistband which God willing won't be for several decades, if ever.

First of all, let us never refer to boobies using the word breasticles again. That's just gross. There are so many ways to describe how great boobs are (even for us girls because they get us things and can be used as a distraction as in he can't notice all these shopping bags since he's staring at the cleavage :p), but breasticles should not be one of them.

Second, I agree with blobfan that us ladies need to keep it classy up in here. However, I'm also extremely competitive, so . . .

Third, if I can't win it all, then I want blobfan to win. You know - sisterhood and all that.

Agreed. I love our guys on here but it'd be great to see one of us chicas bring it home. Given our seeding, we might have to leave the heavy lifting to xuab and her #5 seed. She'll have to work her way past Snipe but I have a feeling all his words disappear when confronted with feminine wiles.

No. Getting N.O.W. involved will just motivate him to fight harder. Better to subdue him with a gentle touch and lull him into listlessness so he neither knows nor cares that he's getting his butt thrashed. In fact, if she plays the game correctly, he'll think he let her win.

OK, as a #12 seed, I need to work on my Posting Quality, so here I am taking this thing to a whole new level of nerdiness, which might earn me yet another reply that I need a hobby, sex, a girl, or all of the above, all at once.

So what I did was drop in the host cities from the real tournament into this tournament. I imagine a LOT of the posters will be local so it won't matter that much, but yoou never know we do have some posters that live from far away, and they might just wind up with a virtual home game. I'm not sure if Michigan Muskie will take that into account in weighting the probablilities.

I had to take some liberties, as the real tourney has East, West, Southeast, and Southwest regions. I can map East and West perfectly, for SE and SW, I looked at the #1 seeds, SE has Pitt playing in Cleveland, and SW has Texas playing in Tulsa - so I have deemed the SE region to be our North region, and the SW region to be our South region.

We are using a straight 64 team format, no play in horseshit. Which is kind of a shame, because I can't send PM Thor to the Dayton play in game. Then again no Muskie fan should be subjected to UD Arena, so its just as well the play in games were cancelled.

Remember for the NIT tournament, higher seed has home court until the final four at Madison Square Garden.

Tulsa has DIBS on Gus Johnson!

Here's a snippet of the piece that's being done on my Beard prior to the match-ups...

As for an 8/9 match-up, the beard was asked about that last night while he was out with friends. "Truthfully, I'm simply glad to be here. Our opponent, who we have not named since the seedings came out, is a tough match-up, but one we feel confident in. As to coming out and taking on a 1 seed in the second round, if it is to come to that? Well, we'll cross that bridge when we get there."

Titan's Beard, the subject of many discussions throughout the XH community, does have hopes of making a run. He's also going to dedicate every minute of competition to Firehose, a legendary poster who's commitment and excellence towards facial hair was a standard barer on the message board. "We all love Firehose and the individual, poster, and beard that he was. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is playing for him. But damn it all if I won't give it everything while he watches down from above."

The rest of the interview with Titan's Beard can be read later on.

Sorry, you are the #9 seed, had to protect the #8 seed you know.

Actually, I don't think anybody got a virtual home game, and as I stated, all I did was drop in the real host towns from the real bracket into their respective places on this bracket. Maybe next year, IF I am offered and accept, an invite to sit on the Selection Committee, we can work out some fictional host cities to send people to, just to make this all the nerdier. (Hey, if I am on the Selection Committee, does that mean I have to excuse myself from the Selection Committee Board Room when my team is being discussed?)

BUT - I do find it interesting that just by chance, MOR (who I believe is from Cleveland and is a 2 seed, has to go to Chi-Town to play Michigan Muskie (#15 seed). I wonder who is closer to Chi Town in that one. If I had put more thought into this and tried to protect the top 4 seeds, MOR would have gotten a game in Cleveland.

Because the venue for my 2 vs. 15 match is only about 200 miles from my home court, I'm tempted a new "proximity advantage" variable to the game-outcome scoring system and assigning it a very, very substantial weight factor.

*Each individual match will be simulated. In fact, with one keystroke, I can simulate all 32 first-round contests, all and 16 second-round contests - each one returning a final score (including the possibility of OT) based on both probability and variance. The reason I haven't set up the spreadsheet to automatically generate the Elite 8, Final 4, and eventual champion and runner up is because there are so many possible seed vs. seed match-ups and I'm too lazy to program a function that will consider every single possibility and then assign a probability factor. It will be easier to just plug in that number based on who advances to the Sweet 16.

It's amazing how much fun one can have with IF arrays and random generating functions after midnight.

Maybe *amazing* isn't the correct word here...

Please see my smear campaign of the high and mighty PMI over on the "Home from Duquesne" thread. Hope you can figure his admitted rape of the whores of Shittsburgh into your arrays and functions. I work in IT so I may be able to help. PM me if you need to.

I'm looking at this bracket and there is literally no one I fear. paulxu has stumbled down the stretch, attending a losing effort in Charlotte. He's ripe for the first upset of the day. I think boozehound has a real shot at xuab, who's rep points almost all come from the Chris Mack Show threads. A paper tiger if I've seen one. The ensuing 12/13 matchup between booze and I is what the tourney is all about, a ratings bonanza. I think it comes down to a critical turnover by you know who behind the bottle and I cruise in the last 1:30. Assuming Sixfig holds seed (not a guarantee) I find it difficult to believe a man who used my own in game photo of Chris Mack to cut and paste shoddily to the statue in front of the Tas has the creative wherewithal to out maneuver me for 40 minutes. #1 goes crashing down. Lucho or xu95 would be a tussle, but no one fears the 8 and 9 seeds, nor should they. The bottom of the region is just that, the bottom. Waggy's going to take all your asses out - one liner after one liner after one liner. Although, no one comes more prepared than Snipe, so anything can be said or done at that point. It will be a good match. Lastly, I fully expect xubrew to make the 2/15 matchup one for the ages, if he can find the shift key on his keyboard. So much talent, so little fundamentals.

I just ran 28 simulations before a 15 finally beat a 2. (I'm a 15.) Even 16 seeds fared better with two victories and one narrow loss in OT.

3 seeds lose way more often. You should be nervous.

Your own game photo? I got that from the Enquirer. If you are the photographer from the Enquirer, well, hooray. At least I had the wherewithal to put the photo of Mack and the statue of D'artagnon together. Considering I whipped that up about 30 minutes after the Crosstown Shootout with Microsoft Paint I'd say its not that bad. That's what separates me from all others. My creativity, quick wit, and comedic timing have led me to the top. I mean, I could have just taken a pic of a Xavier player or coach and just slapped it on as my avatar, but I take the time to photoshop and use my mind. That's a Jesuit education right there!

When it comes down to it I'm confident I'll be cutting down the nets at the end.

Yeah, that was fun - I'll do it again. Maybe we can have a "regular season" that coincides (roughly) with conference play for X. Everyone reports to me their rep level and post count before the official start date. Then all players will be evaluated during the same time period (i.e. I'll be comparing everyone's body of work over a fixed schedule.)

Then, we'll do the selection show at the end of the regular season, and run the tourney when the real A-10 tourney starts.

Don't start sending the numbers yet. I'm not ready.

This could lead to a downward spiral of posts for DC. He's going to start advocating playing West Virginia at a neutral site, lauding the efforts of Cole Hamels and say that his trunk is hooker free. He'll even start saying that UD has passed us as a program.

But as long as he pulls it together by March he will be a dangerous match-up. Unless he starts criticizing Tu Holloway's choice of footwear - then all bets are off.

Okay, I've decided since X made an early exit last weekend, and because my own brackets are burnt toast, I need to revive XH Madness to keep me interested.

Seedings will be announced on Easter Sunday (time TBD) using a similar formula to the one used in 2011 and 2012. Each contributing participant will be ranked by a proprietary system called PRI. (Poster Ranking Index.) Variables that factor into your PRI include overall reputation rank, efficiency, and support of the site. (i.e. you get bonus points for being a supporting member.) Your PRI will determine your seeding, unless the Selection Committee overrides it.

So you have a couple of days to reach into your wallet if you want to buy your way into a better seed :)

Contest will begin Monday. Individual matches are decided by probability and a random number generator. Probability is simply the history of seed matchups in the NCAA tournament modern era.

I swear to God I'm really not this much of a nerd. I just like brackets. And Excel. Maybe I am a nerd.

I built a simulator in Excel using the random number generator function. With one click of the button, it will return the scores of each team. The probability of a victory (including margin of victory) is influenced by strength of seed using real historical data across a 30-year time span of actual NCAA basketball tournament play.

Also, the baby bump means I can't even see my stupid feet much less dribble up and down a court. This is why no one watches the WNBA. (Also, if I lose I may cry. I may also cry if I win. Could also cry at the halftime show or during a timeout. Let's be real, if the stupid "if I had a brain" commercial can make me cry, anything will.

Wow! First time ever in the tournament. Thanks for the opportunity, love the upset potential of a 13 seed. No chance I beat Waggy though.

Actually, according to the sim, you have at 21.7% chance of beating Waggy.

Wow, some pretty big upsets there. I picked Xpectations over 87, and gladdenguy over 09.

Next round, PM Thor v Waggy will be a great matchup - the firefighter vs the flamethrower. I think 94 Grad v Lady Muskie will be a VERY physical game, with a lot of touching. Tardy Turtle v X-Band is a total nerd fest, and MOR better bring his A game v Titan.

I can't look past Juice. He will play a tough game and try to exploit my white privilege, and will likely consider it a micro-aggression every time I "shoot." Tough bracket, with GoMuskies and KahnsKrazy as the 1 and 3 in my region. I'm going to rest up, get some dinner, and start looking at tape.

Good luck to all.
