The Xavier Musketeer football team traveled to Edwardsville Illinois to take on the SIUE Cougars this past Saturday. The already shallow numbers of the Musketeers saw Jr RB/WR Eric Miles out of the game (personal/work), Graduate Student starting QB Chris Greenwood out (shoulder), starting Jr TE/DE Scotty McLoughlin out (knee), and starting Jr LB Wyatt Link also out (knee). This left the Musketeers 22 strong in numbers when taking the field for the opening kickoff while giving Fr QB Teddy Popaliski and Fr RB/CB Lewis Carney both their first starts in the Muskie backfield.
Xavier won the coin toss and deferred to the 2nd half. SIUE got the ball and proceeded to drive down the field and promptly score, and after going for 2 (there were uprights this week) and getting stuffed the Cougars found themselves up 6-0. The Muskie offense couldn't get going their first drive and were forced to punt away. The Cougar offense once again drove down the field at will on the Muskie defense, taking Grad Student DE Jeff Dayton out of the game with a knee injury, scoring a TD to go up 13-0, still early in the first quarter. In the second quarter Teddy Popaliski got a drive going that took Lewis Carney out of the game with an elbow injury, leaving Brandon Tucker at RB. The drive stalled and X lined up for a fieldgoal which was blocked, then recovered behind the line by Sr C Mike Morse and returned inside the 5 yd line. Jr DT/FB Jamie Tilton pushed the ball in from there with the ensuing XP also blocked, making it a 13-6 deficit early in the 2nd. With 9 minutes left in the second and Muskies with the ball Jr Brandon Tucker got a handoff and got tackled at the line. During the tackle Tuck went down with a leg injury in which he broke his right tibia and dislocated fibula, leaving the field in an ambulance and going out for the season. This left Jamie Tilton to do all the running for the game. The score stayed the same going into halftime, Muskies down 13-6.
X got the ball to start the second half and drove down the field. Teddy hit Sr WR Dan Deters on a slant route for a TD and the PAT was missed cutting the SIUE lead to 1, 13-12. X's defense held strong once again and when the offense got the ball back the drove down the field and hit Jr WR Jon Deters on a bubble screen for another TD, which the 2pt conversion failed, giving X thier first lead of the game 18-13 midway through the 3rd. X's defense once again held strong while the offense milked the clock. SIUE then drove down the field with less than 10 min left in the game and got inside the Muskie 15, where converted WR into DE Jr Nick Sexton stripped the quarterback and Fr DB Keenan Collins recovered the fumble to give the Muskies their 2nd turnover forced in the game (both fumbles recovered by Collins) and put the offense in control. The offense drove but stalled before putting any points on the board and giving SIUE the ball with 3 minutes left down 5. Xavier's defense held strong the first 3 plays leaving SIUE with a 4th and 1 from midfield with a little over a minute remaining. The Musketeer defense stopped them again and the offense came out in victory formation to give X a most improbable win.
Xavier went into the game with 22 players dressed. After 2 game ending and 1 season ending injury in the first half X found themselves with 19 players on their sideline and down 13-0 early in the game on the road. There were times when X would be kicking an XP and the sideline was empty besides the coaches as the remaining 8 players were in the box getting ready to go on kickoff. There were multiple players that played most special teams and then some players who did that while going both ways. X dug deep and played their heart out leaving everything on the field. Shout out to OL Mike Morse, Logan OSicky, Steve Foy, Zach Keller, and Collin Tulley all who went in and played D line as needed. WRs Dan and Jon Deters stepped in at CB after the RB/CB's went out. WR Nick Sexton stepped in at D line and stepped up big for the defense, also taking a few plays at free safety. DT Jamie Tilton stepped in at RB and pounded the ball when called upon. Jr Scott Manze filled in as needed all over the field including handfuls of plays at CB, Safety, WR, and TE. Jr CB Pat Fagel started at LB and Fr FS Marcus Franklin stepped up in that position when Fagel was temporarily out with an injury. Fr Teddy Popaliski led the X offense with poise in the second half taking control and leading the Muskies to victory. Xavier improves to 2-1 (1-1) and is heading into a much needed bye week before a huge matchup with rival Miami OH Oct 9. Everyone should be proud to be a Musketeer Football fan after this game.
