Screw you St Louis.

One of the things about this team that has consistently amazed me is the play of the Reds' subs. The middle infield is Jannish and Valaika and the Reds don't seem to miss a beat. OK, so its the Cubs and the Brewers, but its still pretty impressive. Cairo fills in for Votto earlier in the year and plays great...Cairo fills in for Rolen when they rest him and always seems to play well. Heisey with a big hit tonight. Seems to happen damn near every game.
Intangibles, I guess. Little to no drop off when you lose your middle infielders....in the middle of a pennant race...in late August....amazing. Does Cabrera jump right back into the starting lineup when he's healthy? The great thing is...so far, it doesn't seem to matter.

I'm a Cards fan, so it's tough for me to watch it all go down like this, but barring a sweep this weekend and one hell of a turnaround, I'm about ready to call the race over. I just think it looks like the Reds want it more. All year long, the Reds have been able to come back and grit out the tough games, while the Cardinals just seem to be complacent with mediocrity and individual performances (and just plain sucking right now). They seem to have a good team chemistry that we just don't have right now, and are playing better even though we have equal or more talent at most positions.
If the Cards are unable to pull off a highly-unlikely comeback, go Reds. It's good for the city and for the NL Central to have them playing playoff-caliber baseball.

People can look back at my posts about Dusty, I wasn't a fan. But dammit, he's sqeezed every ounce of effort out of this team that I could imagine. That guy is a damn good manager. I eat my words. I am impressed. Very impressed.
This is a breakout year for this team. When does Vottos contract end anyway?
Bringing up the Cuban now? Holy crap, talk about stomping on an opponents neck. Dagger. We are making a major, major push for the WS. No other team can even consider bringing up that kind of pitching talent this late in the year.

Speaking of eating words I predicted that the Cardinals sweep would start a downfall for the Reds.

I've never met Dusty, and I'm not a Red's fan, but Dusty is one of the coolest managers in the league. My best friend's dad played for Dusty in San Fran and they are close. I've heard some good stories, and the thing that stands out is he is a true players manager. He really cares for his guys.

Even the Enquirer Sports page has the magic number for postseason up now - 27 for the division, 29 for no worse than the W/C.
EDIT - With San Diego losing last night, the Reds are a half game out for home field throughout the postseason. If they can win the series in St. Louis, we may well start to focus more on the Padres/Braves/Phillies and less on the Cards.

The Reds wouldn't even play the Cards in the first round of the playoffs no matter what anyway. I don't care who they play in the first round (Padres, Phillies, Braves, Giants). As long as I'm in a Reds hoodie for (1,2, or 3) postseason series I could care less. And I don't care if we don't have an ace, this team has a different guy(s) step up every night. Its incredible.
I can't explain my excitement. I stared at the ceiling last night trying to imagine GABP in October.
I am going to be hugging that skater chick from the movie "major league" down at GABP if these wins keep coming.

Votto is going to the arbritation table this winter. He is going to get PAID. Regardless of how arbitration turns out, he is still the Reds property for the next three seasons. My guess is that he'll be awarded 6-7 million.
I'm hoping they take the Brandon Phillips route and sign him to an extension well before he's eligible for free agency after the 2013 season. Lock him up!
Harang will come off the books this season and Coco next season, so there should be enough in the kittty to offer him an extension after 2011.
As far as this team goes, I'm like the recovering alcoholic....just enjoying them day by day. The thought of wearing a stocking cap at GABP in October is enough to ruin my train of thought for an entire day, so I'm taking it slow.

Votto is having a season comparable (though not quite as good) as Ryan Howard's first arbitration year, where Howard won a $10M decision.
However, Howard had also just hit 58 HR, but from an rate-state point of view, their seasons aren't that different:
Votto10: .325/.421/.600, 169 OPS+
Howard06: .313/.425/.659, 167 OPS+
OPS+ is normalized to ballpark and league stats, hence Votto's higher number, despite Howard's higher raw rate stats.
Overall takeaway: I'd expect more than $6-7M for Votto in arbitration. It's probably a good risk-minimization move for both teams for the Reds to buy out some of those arb years.
What I hope the Reds *don't* do is assume that players having career years or career resurgences have magically found some new "true talent level". A career year is a career year for a reason.

I had forgotten how much of an outlier Ryan Howard was. Those 58HR must have done a number on the arbitrators.
Prince Fielder is the one I'd be looking at. Relatively recent, coming off a pair seasons comparable to Votto's last two. Votto has the advantage of the good season of the pair being the most recent one.
If I had to guess, I'd guess around 7.5M for Votto.

That's crazy. I've been in spitting distance of you and didn't know it. My co worker has season tickets in the same row, the two seats on the end closer to right field. Damn. I guess it was wishful thinking on my part to think we still had one more year of paying him dirt cheap. He will command big money, but he deserves it and the Reds should willingly pay it. I'd like to see them be proactive and not get to arbitration, but that is highly unlikely.

I went last night with my son and I was able to get 2 seats in 116 about 9 rows back of the Brewer dugout thru Stub Hub for $38.00, which included the handling charge. Not a bad deal at all and they were very nice seats. I know it's a school night and the economy is down but for a 1st place team to not even draw 20,000 is a bit embarrassing.
Anyway, we enjoyed it a lot. It's nice to talk about the Reds in September. I was there for the 1 game playoff against the Mets and that damn Al Leiter. It's has been a while and the this town could certainly use it.

I'm not concerned about mid-week attendance at all. Tampa is in 1st place and they can't draw 15k. Atlanta is in 1st place only drew 18k last night and that's in a city 2-3x the size of Cincinnati. This economy, heat and back to school are truly the culprits.
The Reds TV and Radio ratings are off the charts. People are still following this team, but most don't have the scratch to go to week day games. Weekend, post-payday games have been well attended and the Reds are currently 4th in the ML in attendance boost year over year. One of the teams they trail is Minnesota, who is pimping a new stadium.

My biggest beef with the Reds ticket situation is that they are frequently "sold out" of the $5 tickets, and the next step up is the $14 seats. That's a big difference if I'm deciding on a whim if I want to go to the game or not. If I can get in for $5, I'm easily spending the other $9 at the concession stand, and likely well over that. I have walked away from two business day specials this year because of the lack of $5 tickets at the gate.

It's true that not all stadiums in MLB have a cheap option available, but the Reds have always been good at making a good number of seats affordable. I was always under the impression that the $5 seats are available on game days only - which makes it from difficult to next to impossible to order online.
But even in places like New York (Citi Field) and San Francisco (AT&T Park), they also have different price points for certain opponents. Cincinnati does this to a lesser extent (Opening Day had a $10 bump on tickets, 1 or 2 series earlier in the year had a $5 bump), but I do like the notion of "Premium" series along with "Gold" and "Value" series. In the end, a weekday series against a weak opponent is going to be a tough sell when school starts up again along with any associated activities. Even the Atlanta Braves are drawing flies this time of year against the dregs of the NL East.

I get it. But when you're advertising a $5 ticket that is available in such small quantities that it's been sold out at every game I've been to, eventually, it feels like a bait and switch. It's still supply and demand, but it's also a little about customer service and building fan loyalty.

They do sell the $5 tickets in advance and online. Online you have to pay fees and processing, so 4 tickets comes out to about $29.29. That comes out to $7.32 a ticket.
If you stop by the ballpark you can buy them for $5 a piece with no other charges, you can also buy them in advance. I am looking at Friday, September 10 (Pirates) and Tuesday, September 14th (Diamondbacks). If I buy all my tickets at once at the staduim I will avoid the fees.
Does anyone know if they have a 15 minute parking area for people that are buying tickets? I can't remember. That could be easy during the middle of the day, the ticket office is open at 9am through the day.

I've never understood why they charge customers a convenience fee for buying tickets on-line when it seems to be more convenient for the company selling the tickets. Doesn't it same them money to have the tickets handled by computer rather than a person?
I love the idea of picking up some cheap tickets to see a couple more weeknight games this season. Since I work downtown it's actually more convenient than weekend games. I just stay here and make hubby drive in to join me. If the weather cools off it could be nice and I like supporting the Reds.

I've never understood why they charge customers a convenience fee for buying tickets on-line when it seems to be more convenient for the company selling the tickets. Doesn't it same them money to have the tickets handled by computer rather than a person?

Ultimately, it's more convenient for me to NOT pay more AND hand over my contact info so the ticket vendor can harrass me with spam. When possible I'll make a special trip to the ticket office to avoid the 'convenience' fee. I guess I just hate it when they lie. It should be called an e-ticket fee or something.
Someone at work just said that Chapman will be pitching again tonight. Anyone know if that's true? It would be nice to see that in person. I must admit to a certain amount of willful ignorance when it comes to scheduling pitchers and who pitches when and what night. I know the starters rotate. After that, the system doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

San Diego is going to stay a mess. They relied on young pitchers all year and now they are all reaching their innings limit. Their offense sucks. The only team the Reds should be scared of in the playoffs are the Phillies.

I hate to put reason behind a convenience charge, but the Reds do not sell the tickets online, Ticketmaster does. If they are to make money, the Reds either have to give them a cut of the ticket price or they have to charge a convenience charge.

And as I mentioned previously, Ticketmaster double-charges: convenience fee plus they share/sell my contact info to anyone they can. Their opt-out system has a 10-30 day delay and doesn't always take. Every time I order through Ticketmaster I have to create a new alias address and shut it down, plus I pay extra to print the tickets myself rather than give them my mailing address. When X switched to Ticketmaster to handle Bball tickets it took most of the season to get off Ticketmaster's spam list.

The game was great fun last night! Aside from the bottom of th 7th lasting 45 minutes while the Brewers desperately tried to find a lively pitcher, that is. I think watching Chapman made them week in the arms. I can't remember the last time I went to a Reds game when the whole crowd seemed to be into it until the end. I'm definitely going to try to get back for 1-2 more before the regular season ends.

And with today's win, the MN is now 21. The Reds now own the best record in the NL - the way things have gone recently, the Phillies could be the biggest threat to home field. The Braves' lead has shrunk to a game over Philly, and they've played halfway decent ball (as opposed to San Diego and St. Louis' free fall).
Cincy could use a win tomorrow to put another nail in the StL coffin and get some more momentum going into the Colorado series. This is the time of year where Colorado has been dangerous of late.

No kidding Colorado doesn't give up - the NL West is now a 3 team race with the Giants 2 back of SD and the Rockies now 4.5 games back with their recent surge.
With the Cards now playing the Braves on the road (and this is the series that they can be expected to win or at least split) - the Reds would do well to avoid a sweep out west and get back on track against the Pirates and D-Backs next week.
But the lead is still 6 games over the Cards and the magic number now down into the teens (19).

The middle relief is perfectly fine. Masset was pretty unlucky and Chapman was flat nasty while pitching for the third night in a row. Most teams would be thrilled to have a pen as solid as this one.

Whatever they found in Volquez's delivery at Dayton, they fixed it - he struck out everyone in the Pirates' lineup at least once. As for the bullpen, they've got to do a better job holding the runners, especially Masset. His gaffe in Colorado stood out with their runner stealing home uncontested. Chapman also gave up a double steal before the Pirates got a 2-run single off of him last night.
That said, a pair of extra-inning wins has been great so far, and it was also great seeing ex-Red Alex Gonzalez put another nail in the soon-to-be-sealed Cards coffin.

The braves would be a crazy matchup for the reds. Every one of the games against them this year has been really entertaining.
Out west, San Fran would be a tough matchup for us as well despite the difficulties they've had with their aces the last month or so.
Lincecum, Zito, and Cain is a solid solid staff in a best of 5. Not to mention they completely destroyed our pitching outscoring us like 38-16 or something like that last series

Actually, I got section 532 for the 1st game, 526 for the second, and 414 for possibly the 3rd. The first two games were $40 a pop and the third was $50. After "processing fees" it came out to just over $900. Get this, the "processing fees" were about $40 for each days worth of tickets. I think the craziness over playoff tickets has a direct correlation to the recent attendance. Times are tough for almost everyone, people have to make choices.
Most tickets are bought well before the season starts. The telltale sign to how Reds fans respond to this season will be in partial and full season ticket packages, and single game ticket sales over the winter. 4 of every 5 people in the ballpark on a given night bought their tickets weeks or months in advance. Walkup bumps over more than 20% are rare for any team in any sport.

Last night my wife and 2 kids went to the Reds game and got the $5 tickets (so I spent $20 total) and sat in the lower level on the first base line. We were probably 20 rows up. We could have gotten closer if we wanted to. I'm tempted to do it again tonight. Great seats. Awesome price. The only down side is that we got to leave somewhere between 9 and 9:30 PM so that the kids don't go to bed too late. However. we can usually make it to through the seventh inning. Uh, the Reds are done playing the Braves.
They finish with one more vs Arizona, 6 against the Astros and Brewers and 3 against the Padres.
The Reds can go 8-8 and St Louis would have to finish 17-1 just to force a one game playoff. The Reds are going to win the division. Even if they finish 4-12, I'd bet my savings account the Cardinals don't finish 13-5. That team is already making tee times for October.
The issue now is keeping everyone healthy and fresh, and reminding Cordero that he doesn't have to throw meatballs over the middle to get strike calls.
Hopefully the Braves keep fading and the wild card comes from the NL West. I think Philly will end up with the best record, so the Reds would end up playing San Diego, SF, or Colorado in the first round. I know Colorado is hot, but I'll take my chances with them and especially the other two teams over facing the Phillies. Let Philly crush someone else and take your chance with them in the NLCS, because that means the Reds would make the NLCS, which would be awesome.

Houston won't be easy - they're playing their best ball right now and you could make a good argument that their top 3 pitchers in their rotation (Wandy Rodriguez, J.A. Happ, and Brett Myers) would be better and more consistent than what the Reds have right now. Their problem is just that their offense has been abysmal all season.
However, the Reds have taken care of their business and then some against Houston, so I would expect them to maybe go 4-2 or 3-3 against the Astros. I just hope the Reds can clinch the Central at either Milwaukee or San Diego next week and not have a ton of pressure awaiting them when they come back home for their final homestand.

So what do you do about closer? If Cordero is still pitching this lousy in the next two weeks, I would think you would have to make a change before the playoffs.
He was getting two strikes on just about every batter yesterday and he couldn't put them away. In fact, the hitters were all taking pretty good cuts at his pitches, even with two strikes and behind on the count. He isn't fooling anyone right now.
Did he ever throw a slider to anyone yesterday? I was at the game but it looked to me like he threw nothing but fastballs. But I was sitting first base line in the upper deck so it was tough to tell, particularly since they weren't showing the pitch speed for some reason.

I wouldn't go with Chapman as the closer just yet. To me, he looks dominant at home but a little shaky when on the road or when runners or on base. Now, if you try him as the closer in some of these garbage games at the end of the season, and he does well, then I'm ok with it. However, I'm in favor of keeping Coco as the closer and hoping he gets things turned around in the 16 games that are left in the season. I'm just glad I don't have to make the decision on that one.
Bruce's catch last night was amazing. The future sure is bright for the Reds. The pitching staff is young and full of promise (especially the starters), Bruce is on the verge of greatness, Votto is a MVP, Stubbs has almost 20 HRs and 70 RBI in a so-called "so-so" year at the plate (just imagine what he will be like when he matures at the plate), Phillips is Jason Love-esqe in that you always know you will get solid D with a .270 or so batting avg, and Scott Rolen is showing all these young guys how to approach the game as true professionals. I love the speed in the outfield and the overall team defense. What does this team really need to acquire in the offseason? Just pay Votto a truck load of money and go at it again. Where in the heck is Alonso going to play next year? That's about the only question mark for this team going into next year.

I don't know if Chapman should be the closer right now. I just think of Rick Ankiel when you talk about throwing a rookie out there in such a pressure situation.
I think for now you have to hope Cordero works through this. There are still 2 weeks left so he has time to find his stuff again. I know he's always lived on the edge but he's still the best option we have unless he keeps blowing saves. I'd still want a veteran closing in the playoffs - maybe Artie Rhodes, though he's banged-up.

Agree for the most part. But if we're the week before the season ends and Cordero is still getting hit hard, you have to make a change for the playoffs.
Being up 8 games, the Reds ahve a little luxury of trying to let Cordero work through this. If the Reds were up two games, I suspect a move would be made today. He has struggled all year and but for a great catch, would have blown three saves in a row.

Another "solid" outing by Cordero. Surely Dusty won't run him out there in the 9th in a playoff game with a one run lead. If Dusty does insist on keeping CoCo as the closer, I hope he tweaks a hammy running for the dinner table right before the playoffs.

Cordero makes me bite through my bottom lip everytime he pitches...but my question is who else are we going to run out there? Chapman...Massett?. In a one run playoff game I don't think we have a better alternative.
I will gladly take 3 'nail biting', 'hair pulling', 'Cordero cussing out' saves in the LDS.

We better get used to biting nails and lips because I'm sure we'll have those moments in the playoffs. I definitely wouldn't want Chapman thrown to the fire. He hasn't been great with runners on base so far. You could make the argument for Massett, but I say stick with Cordero.

If you can't even run the bases without hurting yourself then I say it probably would be a good thing to hang up the cleats.

Boys got hammered last night. Hopefully that wakes them up a liitle because it looks like they've started to sleepwalk into the last few series of the year. So many more mental errors lately. I know they're tired, but so are all the other teams in pennant races. Now is the time to start catching fire and go on a roll that extends into the playoffs.

Wasn't Balentien hurt for a while down in Louisville? I'm not sure he played fir the Bats during their stretch/playoff run earlier this month.
And speaking of the postseason, the deadline for registering for NLCS tickets is today. The winners in that drawing should be announced sometime next week.

Magic number now at 1.
And while I'm at it, I've had my criticisms of Dusty Baker, particularly his game mangement. But he has done a fantastic job managing this team. Before the season, I thought this team would probably win about 75 games. And this team has won with its opening day pitcher being hurt and then sent to the bullpen, and the early season ace was a rookie who has since been sent to the bullpen.
Dusty deserves a great deal of consideration for manager of the year.

This town is absolutely pandemonium for the Reds.

I would imagine GABP next week to be absolutely insane.

Ditto here on the NLCS tickets - there's still a small window on Saturday in which you can call the Reds' ticket office for a shot at tickets. It's telephone only as before; no walkup sales are going on.
Contrast that to places like Atlanta and San Francisco where you can actually buy playoff tickets online or in person. I say that because it might be easier getting tickets for road series should they play either 2 of those teams. Philly - forget it. They've sold out wire-to-wire this season.

I'll be pulling for the Reds throughout the playoffs, but Cincy fans need to be hoping they don't meet up with Philly in the NLDS. I'm really thinking the Phillies are going to steamroll their way back to the World Series and play the winner of the Rays or Yankees. Too much solid starting pitching and hitting for any other team in the NL to keep up with them.
Hope I'm wrong, because I'd like to see someone other than Philly and their worst fans in the country make yet another World Series. I'm a one of the few Cubs fans who doesn't hate Dusty Baker. I'll always cheer for a Cincinnati team as long as they're not playing the Bears or Cubs. I love that the Cards didn't win the division this year when everyone thought they would up until about five weeks ago.

I agree, LH. I remember well (unfortunately) when the White Sox won the World Series. No one thought they had a chance when the playoffs started, but their starting pitching got hot all at once and the rest is history. I'd love to see a Twins-Reds World Series of smaller market teams who got there by building solid teams and not buying them.

The matchups are looking more and more like the Reds will meet the Phillies and the Giants would host the Braves. Atlanta has a magic number of 3 to clinch the wild card; the Giants have a 2.5 game lead on Cincy right now. With the Phillies resting their top pitchers against the Braves this weekend, you can expect both Roy Halladay and Roy Oswalt to pitch Games 1 and 2 should they meet in Philly. The Reds haven't done too bad against both Roys this year, but they had some real devastating losses in Philly earlier this year.

So, I'm rooting for San Diego and Philadelphia tomorrow. I think the Padres are the best possible matchup in the first round out of any of the teams. San Diego wins, and they take the division over San Francisco because they have the tiebreaker. San Francisco would have the wildcard in that case and play Philadelphia.

Atlanta's suddenly looking vulnerable for a wild card bid; they'll be going up against Cole Hamels tomorrow (albeit a shorter outing). San Diego needed a sweep of the Giants to force a one-game playoff, but they're now 2/3s of the way home.
Trying to figure out who the Reds will face is like roulette right now.

How fun it would have been to have the old National League setup at this point - Philly would win the old NL East going away at 97-64, but the old NL West would have had SF at the top with a 91-70 record. There would have been a 3-way tie with Atlanta, Cincinnati, and San Diego all holding 90-71 records. As it is, the Reds have the luxury of resting players and setting their rotation while Atlanta, San Diego, and San Francisco have to play to win tomorrow - whether it be a clincher for SF or either a clincher/staying alive for Atlanta and San Diego.
If those teams have a 3-way tie (namely Atlanta and San Diego winning tomorrow), San Diego and San Francisco would have a 1-game playoff in San Diego for the NL West. Winner gets the division and the loser goes to Atlanta for a 1-game playoff for the wild card on Tuesday. The Reds would go to Philly should the Braves win the wild card, but the Reds would go to either San Francisco or San Diego should both of those teams control the NL West and wild card spots.
