At about 100 meters from the cargo bay of the space shuttle Challenger, Bruce McCandless II
was further out than anyone had ever been before. Guided by a Manned Maneuvering Unit
(MMU), astronaut McCandless, pictured above, was floating free in space. McCandless and
fellow NASA astronaut Robert Stewart were the first to experience such an "untethered space
walk" during Space Shuttle mission 41-B in 1984. The MMU works by shooting jets of nitrogen
and has since been used to help deploy and retrieve satellites. With a mass over 140
kilograms, an MMU is heavy on Earth, but, like everything, is weightless when drifting in orbit.
The MMU was replaced with the SAFER backpack propulsion unit.

Maasai warriors cover a battle field as they clash with bows and arrows with members of the Kalenjin tribe in the Kapune hill overlooking the Olmelil valley located in the Transmara District in Western Kenya on March 01, 2008. The Massai, the Kalenjin and the Kisii tribes have recently clashed over ongoing land disputes that erupted after botched local elections during the general elections held in Kenya in December of 2007. Over twenty warriors from the tribes have been killed in bow and arrow battles near the borders of these tribes in the last couple of months.

Dean Potter slack rope walking. No pole. No safety equipment. Rope is slack and wobbles constantly. Drop speaks for itself.

Concerning the last picture, I was watching the last episode of America: The Story of Us the other day. They said that 1 in 3 (I believe that was the number) construction workers died building skyscrapers we see in our cities today.

I've never seen anything that has made me feel so small and unsubstantial. Now I know what it's like to be a Dayton fan.

Jimmy,

Thank you for that. Extraordinary. Damn, are we inconsequential - size wise.

Its crazy isn't it??!?

That VY Canis Majoris, the biggest star we know of, is approx 2,500,000,000 to 2,900,000,000 km across or 1,550,000,000 to 1,800,000,000 miles. It is about 4,900 light years( about 46,357,579,315,645,920 Kilometers from Earth) away from Earth. If Earth's Sun were replaced by VY Canis Majoris, its radius might extend beyond the orbit of Saturn. It would take 7×10 to the 15th power or 70 000 000 000 000 000 (70 quadrillion) Earths to fill the volume of VY Canis Majoris.

http://www.brighthub.com/science/space/articles/29935.aspx
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VY_Canis_Majoris

The numbers are so incredible that its surreal.

The question is, how many dayton fans would it take to fill the volume of VY Canis Majoris? Their heads are much larger than the average human due to undeserving ego.
