Interesting story. I am sure it happens often, telling your buddies "yeah, the Big Ten,etc are after me,etc but you end up in the MAC(no disrespect intended) but surely you would not call a full blown press conference to announce a committment to a school who was not recruiting you? Would you?

I saw this, too. Somebody must have played a trick on this kid by impersonating Cal and Oregon coaches.

That being said, he has to be pretty dumb to fall for it.

That is hilarious in a purely evil way.

Yeah Snipe, that is pure evil. The kid has to be crushed though. Here he thought he was getting all this attention and going to play football at a big time school only to find out it was all a myth.

I agree, if that was someones prank, that is pure evil. Will be interesting to see if his other listed allged suitors(Nevada, OkSt and Illinois) are myth or real. That may be a tell tale sign.

Per the Cal rivals site, he was considered a D1 walk-on at best:

"The scouting report we heard from those in the know said that Hart could always try to walk-on somewhere, but he'd have a long way to go despite his size because he lacks upper body strength and footwork."

Great. I love those reports that came from "those in the know". You seriously cannot have a more reliable source than someone that heard from those in the know.

If it is a practical joke, I fault his high school coaches. They are the one entrusted with making sure that everyone that deals with the kid is on the up and up. If you don't know the coach, get references. Recruiters generally start with the coaches anyway because they want all sorts of information, game film, injury reports, etc.

I would give him thumbs up if he made it all up and just wanted to call a press conference to market himself.

I don't think that high schools should allow press conferences. Talk about absurd.

How awful! My heart breaks for this kid.

If this kid is D-1 at best, dont you think his coach, his parents, or maybe even he wasnt too full of himself to realize something was going on that probably wasnt realistic??? I mean D1 walk on at best, and the Pac 10 is all over him? C'mon. This should have easily been avoided.

I hope that ESPN and SI keep us posted on this one. I am curious to find out what the actual situation was. I can't imagine that anyone would be stupid enough to call a press conference and commit to a school that they knew wasn't recruiting them.

Sounds like this "recruiter" was getting paid for his services.

Also interesting that they note the kids coach as having coached a number of kids who had gone on to play in D1 programs during his coaching tenures. Ya think he should have known better??

McLovin. Now, that's funny.

I just happened to watch that movie yesterday. That was hilarious. I didn't catch the significance of the Hawaii drivers license until I saw the movie.

McLovin in the house!

I thought Superbad was quite good. Not for the meek but some good stuff nonetheless. I've never seen "WTF" used in so many different ways w/ so many different meanings. The Cops were hilarious.

Great Great movie. I know theres a lot of old farts (just kidding;)) on this board, so I figured a lot of people wouldnt know what the license was or the quote. Love that movie.

Knocked Up was better.

NO WAY! ABSOLUTELY NOT! ITS NOT AN OPINION, ITS A FACT SUPERBAD WAS BETTER. YOU ALSO NEED TO WATCH SUPERBAD MORE THAN ONCE, TO FULLY APPRECIATE IT. CLASSIC MOVIE. I COULD WATCH IT 10 TIMES IN ONE DAY.

Knocked up was good, just not even close to superbad.

I have watched Superbad multiple times and thought it was a great movie. I still think Knocked Up was a better movie.

On a whole though, Judd Apatow's best work was the TV show Undeclared on Fox.

I own both Superbad and Knocked up, and prefer Superbad but both are funny. The trailer in Thor's post, looks friggin hilarious. I am also looking forward to that flick.

Sad. Seems incredible he could pull this over on everyone involved. Parents? Coach? Media? Everyone went down hook, line and sinker, no questions asked, no hey, wait a minute here, something isn't adding up? A parent, who has never made a campus visit with their kid? A coach who has never gotten a request for films? In this day and age you can google the kid's name and he'll pop up if he's on anyones recruiting radar. Unbelievable.
