An injury depleted Xavier University Football squad took on Notre Dame College (an NAIA varsity team which is moving up to NCAA Division II in 2010) last Saturday at Roger Bacon Stadium. Early mistakes, two lost fumbles and a blocked punt, led to three Falcon TDs and an NDC 30 - 0 lead at halftime. The Musketeers could not recover and the Falcons cruised to a 40 - 14 win.

Playing without 13 of their season-opening roster of 42, the Muskies battled back in the second half to score twice making the final score 40 - 14. Starting WR Past Nester (also the back-up QB) caught two passes early but left the game at the end of the first quarter with a concussion. Starting QB Chris Greenwood led XU with 52 yards rushing, departed the game at the end of the 3rd quarter with a contusion to the back of his throwing hand. Jon Deters, who hadn't taken a snap at QB in over a year threw his first pass to cousin Dan Deters for a 28-yard TD early on the 4th quarter. On NDC's ensuing series, DB Andrew Bodziony picked up a Falcon fumble and rambled 35 yards for the Muskies second score. Dan Deters threw to TE Scott McLoughlin in the back of the endzone for the 2-point conversion closing out the XU scoring.

The Xavier Defense played well despite having many NDC weapons to stop. Playing in their final game for XU, Linebackers Brett Hoyer and Kevin Tierney combined for 35 tackles to lead the Muskie Defense. Senior LB Eric Anderson got his 1st career iinterception and also chipped in with 5 tackles. DB Andrew Bodziony had 10 tackles and a fumble return for a TD. Senior DT Jon Bokar blocked a Falcon extra-point and NG James Tilton had 13 tackles.

It was a tough season for the Musketeers, but a good one. 22 of the XU opening day, 42-man roster are either freshmen or sophomores and only 8 seniors will be lost to graduation. The future remains very bright and the Musketeers will return to the gridiron in 2010 ready to battle for their 3rd MCFC Championship in four years.
