bad teams kick field goals and that is what Cleveland did and that is why the Bengals won. 3-1, first place, forget about this game. Hard to watch.

Brad St. Louis is being victimized by some damned smart defensive coordinators and man-over-center or sometimes just nose tackles. A damned good long snapper told me that good nose tackles and their like quickly stab at the ball when they see the center's hands tighten. The last second movement often causes a bad snap. The nose guys also clap the ground and in other ways distract the center.
That's really no excuse for a guy who has been in the league as long as St. Louis. But even the best, which he has been for years, lose focus.
Oh, he'll still likely get the boot after the season, but every time there is a bad snap the that, whether it costs the game or not, Graham will be a little more shaky.:D:D:D

I've seen in previous games the referee on the defensvie side of the ball moving the nose tackle off the long snapper on extra points/field goals. Wondering why that happened and why not in yesterday's game. Anyone big on the rule book?
Also, did you hear the announcer (both of which completely sucked, we'll need to be 10-1 before we get better than that b5th stringers) slip up and say Coach Martha Lewis? Is that what he's being called across the league?
Muskie1000

I tend to ignore announcers anymore. My feeling is that they are there to announce the game, not to make fun of the teams they are watching - no matter how bad they are. First game, the called the Bengals, the bungles (not saying they don't deserve it) but announcers who are getting paid to be there should keep those kind of feelings to themselves and actually get some intelligent comments out there. I know, that's alot to ask.

That is the big difference between this year and other recent years to me. Last year's Bengals would have found a way to lose, this team found a way to win.
That being said, something has to be done about Brad St. Louis. He basically has one job, and he can't do it. If he didn't suck at his job the Bengals would be 4-0 right now.
Kahns Krazy

The announcers were flat out horrible. I liked the chucklehead at the end of overtime wondering why the Bengals called a timeout with 7 seconds left because that meant that they'd have to kick off to Cribbs after they made the field goal? I'm pretty sure it's a rule of broadcasting that you don't contradict the guy in the booth with you, but there was no way around that one.

Might not have been directly responsible, but he snapped the ball over Huber's head in the first quarter that cost the Bengals 3 points. Who knows how that would have effected the rest of the game, but it sure wouldn't have hurt the Bengals to have had 3 points on the board that early.

We did win but it is very clear that the Bengals need to do something about St. Louis as well as Daniel Coats. That guy just cannot catch a pass. I am loving this Bengals team though. Every game is intense to the last play with no one giving up. The entire offense believes in Carson and that he will lead them to victory. The crowd at Baltimore was very loud to go along with one of the best teams in football and the Bengals went in there and overcame everything to pull out another last second victory. Who Dey!

I gotta say, I am in love with this defense. They are tough, they play tough, and without the missed tackle on Rice they give up 0 points (even with they only give up 7) against the #2 scoring offense in the NFL. And Steve Blass and Mackey Sasser. It is amazing how the routine can be troublesome when one focuses on it. Psychologists call this "hyper intention." Commonly known as stage fright. It is the reason that one guy always seems to take forever ahead of you at the urinal.
The funny thing is that focusing on the issue actually sabotages oneself. A forced intention makes impossible what one forcibly wishes. This is why Bob Rotella and his ilk tell putters to not try hard.
It is like a pitcher that walks a couple batters. You can see it coming. They try too hard and constrict the muscles. They steer the ball instead of letting it rip. In Zen they say to hit a target, don't aim at it.

heading into the weekend there were A LOT of Texans tickest left. i'd be surprised if it sold out by the end of the week, let alone the end of the day. Houston just isn't a good draw around here (or about anywhere really, considering NFC defending champion Arizona just needed to request an extra 24 hour extension to avoid a tv blackout against the Texans for yesterday).

Anybody wonder as I do if the hit by Ray Lewis on Ocho will result in a fine and suspension? Yeah, it was penalized, but it was a helmet to helmet shot that was intentional. The NFL Alumni list is littered with the results of hits like that and the only way to stop it is with fines and suspensions. A 15-yard penalty that kept a game-winning drive alive is too small a price to pay for that crap.:eek:

last winter I geeked it up by reading Dean Olivers book on basketball statistics. One point he makes is that margin of victory is important. It's the best predictor of future success.
I'm sort of concerned about the past few weeks. But if margin of victory is a good indicator, the Bengals will collapse at the end of the year.
At the very least, let's hope they don't make the playoffs.

As a younger man, I had no use for the Bengals. Then two things happened. First, my older of two sons became a Bengals fan as a toddler. One of the risks I took living in Cincinnati at such an impressionable age. ;) Second, since I have been posting of a few generations of Xavier basketball chatboards, I find it tougher to give Bengals fans crap. Don't ask me why, I guess I'm just soft. That said, it seems just as likely that the Bengals could be 1-4 as 4-1. But, that's what happens when the ball bounces the right way. In some years the ball doesn't bounce the right way, then the season ends up 5-11. However, in years like this for the Bengals maybe it means 11-5.
In any event, I will be taking my Bengals fan son and the rest of my family to the Bears vs. Bengals game. I bought tickets in August never thinking that it could be such a good match-up. The fact that the game was moved to 4:00 p.m. is not ideal, but we'll have fun.

No debate from me. I mean, the Bengals have used last minute, long drives to win games and Denver would have been included had it not been for the goofy play. However, teams that have to rely on last minute drives to win games too many times could eventually have the odds go the other way resulting in a turnover or not making a first down. The Bengals have to find a way to be ahead so that stopping the other team (versus trying to score) is how the team wins.

Lewis should be fined and suspended. Not only was it a helmet to helmet hit on a "helpless" wide receiver, but the ball was 5 feet over Ocho's head. Ocho had no chance to catch the ball and wasn't even making an attempt to catch the ball when he got hit.

Sorry Fred, if it was March, I would definitely choose the Muskies, but because its the beginnning of Muskie season and the end of Bengals season, I have to choose the Bengals.
And fireball, because the Bengals have not won in my lifetime, that is a major reason why I would choose the Bengals game. We just look at it in a different light.
Now, I would much rather have a final four than a superbowl victory, but don't get me wrong, that Superbowl victory would not be far off. One of the major reasons is because most of my buddies are fans of other college basketball teams, but we are all fans of the Bengals.

If they are "done with winning" after a three game stretch against Oakland, Cleveland and Detriot, it will not be a difficult decision.
As it stands, the shootout is scheduled for 7PM and the Bengals game is at 1 PM. I'm not too worried about it. If the Bengals game gets moved to 4:00, it's still not a huge issue. I'd probably roll into the Cintas Center a little later than I would otherwise, but I'm still not going to really miss either game.
If it moves to the night game, which I think starts at 8:30, then I miss the first quarter of the Bengals game.
Not terribly worried about it. I'm going to see both games. I think I should probably take the 14th off.

Ya and the Steelers are real great getting that 8 point win over the lions. I could honestly care less about which division is better as long as the giants are winning. The top of the NFC east looks better to me at this point. Can't fault the giants for the weak beginning schedule. They took care of business absolutely dominating the last 3 weeks. Next 6 games are tough and will reveal a lot. The giants have a ton of starters out and haven't missed a beat but it has been against inferior competition, so we will see soon.

Not a chance he gets suspended but I think he will get fined.

A Ravens spokesman told The Sun that he has not heard whether Lewis will contest the discipline. The fine represents 42.5 percent of Lewis’ weekly salary (he makes $58,823 for each of the 17 weeks of the regular season).
Ray Lewis only makes $1m?
I call shenanigans.
His last contract pays him $22m over 3 years. He might have got $19m in bonuses and only $1m in annual "salary", but I doubt it. Either way he is making a lot more than $58k in total compensation on a per game basis - by math he makes $458,333 per game (pre-tax).

This what Chad had on his Twitter account after the Ravens game:
"Please don't fine Ray Lewis Mr. Roger Goodell, it was a clean hit, it's part of the game, save the fines for me," Ochocinco wrote.
Didnt realize he had posted that.
Here is what Harbaugh said:
Harbaugh added: "Ray Lewis is a tough, a physical guy. Ray Lewis is also as great a sportsman as I've met. He plays good, clean football. I guarantee you the shot on Ochocinco was in the strike zone. I want to stand behind Ray in that sense."
I havent watched the play again since I saw it live but from what I remember seeing live it definitely looked like a helmet to helmet and an necessary hit.

I was at the game with the rest of my family. My older son is a Bengals fan. I thought the Bengals looked very good. When Carson Palmer is on like he was yesterday, there are few better QB's in the league. The Bears looked like the Browns to my, so that was familiar. It was my first time in PBS and I liked it. I'm not defecting from being a Browns fan, but am at least able to tolerate the Bengals these days. As a dad, I was happy that my son was happy. That may change however if the Browns ever decide to stop playing like a bad high school team.
Enjoy it Bengal fans. Oh and prayer for my Browns who are on life support.

Palmer looked good because his receivers caught the ball when it hit their hands. They only threw to the tight end once (for a TD). It has got to piss a quarterback right the hell off when he hits the receiver in the hands and ends up as an interception.
And this defense is tough.

Never too early to start thinking about potential flex scheduling games down the road - do you think there's any chance that the Bengals-Vikings game in December (the same day as the Shootout) could get moved up from a 1 PM kickoff to 8:30 Sunday night where NBC would be covering the game?

I don't think that that game will move. Currently, the Eagles are set to play at the Giants on Sunday night that week, and I don't see them dropping teams from two of the biggest tv markets for the Vikings and Bengals. I think our best shot at getting bumped up to the Sunday night game is the week after, when we play San Diego and the scheduled Sunday night game is Minnesota @ Carolina.

Good point, the Eagles and Giants game would not get moved in favor of the Bengals/Vikings. Now, the Bengals game could get moved to the 4:00 slot and that would get over a little after seven and it would be shoot out time. What a day.

if this is the kind of sports problems we have to face - I will take it. Rather have great teams with conflicts in the game schedules than what we've had in the past. I can't remember seeing a Bengals team play like this.
First of all, they are good. Very good. I wasn't completely sure until Baltimore, but they have proved that they are one of the best teams in the NFL right now.
The Defense is smothering. They get consistent pressure on the QB, and the corners are good enough that we can blitz linebackers and trust the CB's in single coverage.
I am a bit concerned about Benson though. Hopefully his injury is minor because we need him back.
I think that this team is much better than the 2005 playoff team. They actually have the defense to win some playoff games. It could be a very big year for the Bengals. Who Dey!

I like what Carson told CBS after the game. They aren't nearly good enough to win a Super Bowl yet. They aren't even good enough to make a deep playoff run yet. They need to keep focused and continue to improve, especially on offense, if they hope to accomplish those things. These next three games are big trap games... they better be ready.

So much to blame, don't even know where to start. Why give the ball to Jeremi in the first place? How many times has he carried the ball this year? One? So let's give it to him in crunch time. Why throw a deep ball to Brian Leonard on third down?
The missed opportunities piled high. Shayne's missed FG should never have been an attempt in the first place. Play calling in the red zone was puzzling at best today.
I love our corners but they missed a lot of INT chances today. Most notably was JJ's on 3rd down on the Raiders drive to tie the game at 17. Right through his hands. Just another example of a missed opportunity.
Finally, why travel to Oakland on Saturday instead of Friday which is what teams, including the Bengals, normally do? Did that contribute to the lack of energy we saw on the field today?
When will the Bengals ever figure out how to cover a tight end?
They did not protect the ball today. Turnovers are the greatest neutralizer in the sport. The Bengals dominated the time of possession, the stat sheet, and were the better team. Lack of focus and questionable coaching decisions led to turnovers that cost the team a game that would have padded their AFC North lead to essentially three games.
The Bengals are 0 for Oakland. Time to take their frustration out on Cleveland and Detwat.

I'm not going to question the win. We're division champs for only the second time since 1990. I will f'ing take it!

First place is first place.
Suck it Shittsburgh!!!
Amen Brother! WHO DEY!
The Bengals are 10-5 and just clinched the AFC North.
Is this the best you can come up with?
AFC NORTH CHAMPS! WHO DEY!
One of which was that bullshit penalty called after a review. I had no idea that was even possible.
It was my understanding that you could not call penalties during a review. Perhaps they make an exception for out of bounds plays, but I had no idea.
And apparently the Bengals/Jets game is next week's night game.
And I hope Pittsburgh needs us to win and we throw the game! Up 1 with a minute left, throw the ball out of the back of the endzone and jump up and down in celebration. It would be an instant classic.
WHO DEY! WHO DEY!

Day 1 Bengals fan.....much suffering over the years....sat in the freezing cold and snow couple years ago on Christmas eve @ Mile High to see them lose on last play missed extra point....still hold grudge against Lewis Billups when Montana threw it right into his breadbasket in the '81 Bowl haha....nervous again this year....sorry if I'm not all RAH RAH about this team. Denver needs a miracle.

It's cool. I lived in Denver for some time so kind of became an adopted Broncos fan. Talk about frustrating. Fun game to watch yesterday - too bad they fell through at the end.

Lewis Billups wasn't on the 1981 Super Bowl team.

Lewis Billups (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/2003-12-22-athletes-assault-side_x.htm)
He was accused of drugging and raping a woman and videotaping the 1992 assault in an attempt to extort $20,000 in exchange for not sending the tape to her husband and others. He pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of criminal conspiracy and was sentenced to three years' probation. He died in a 1994 auto accident when he lost control of a Corvette at 100 mph.
Post-NFL Career (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Billups)
At the end of his NFL career, Billups had a number of brushes with the law. He reportedly threatened to kill Jenny Chapman, the sister of NBA player Rex Chapman, whom he was dating. He eventually served over a year in prison, gaining his release on April 4, 1994. Six days later, Billups died in a car crash when driving at speeds in excess of 100 mph he lost control on Interstate 4 his corvette convertible destroying over 50 meters of steel railing. Billups friend, David Green, who was seated next to him was killed on impact, but Billups was thrown from the car and was later found by highway patrol men attending to the scene. Billups was taken to the Orlando hospital where he died from his injuries.
Then also he waived his gun at local policemen! (http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1356&dat=19900105&id=lisTAAAAIBAJ&sjid=DAcEAAAAIBAJ&pg=4147,2579251)
He made the NFL All-Time All Turd Team! (http://archive.profootballtalk.com/All-TimeAll-Turd.htm)
Lewis Billups, CB, Bengals: Billups allegedly drugged and raped a woman, videotaped the incident, and then threatened to send the tape to her husband if she didn't come up with $20,000. He pleaded no contest to criminal conspiracy and died in 1994 after losing control of his vehicle at 100 miles per hour.
Have fun in hell Lewis Billups!
