Planes trains and automobiles is definitely up there as well. I'm gonna go with PTA. Then Home Alone (One of the first movies I can remember seeing), then probably the vacations

John Bender: Eat my shorts.
Richard Vernon: What was that?
John Bender: Eat... My... Shorts.
Richard Vernon: You just bought yourself another Saturday.
John Bender: Ooh, I'm crushed.
Richard Vernon: You just bought one more.
John Bender: Well I'm free the Saturday after that. Beyond that, I'm going to have to check my calendar.
Richard Vernon: Good, cause it's going to be filled. We'll keep going. You want another one? Just say the word say it. Instead of going to prison you'll come here. Are you through?
John Bender: No.
Richard Vernon: I'm doing society a favor.
John Bender: So?
Richard Vernon: That's another one right now! I've got you for the rest of your natural born life if you don't watch your step. You want another one?
John Bender: Yes.
Richard Vernon: You got it! You got another one right there! That's another one pal!
Claire Standish: Cut it out!
Richard Vernon: You through?
John Bender: Not even close bud!
Richard Vernon: Good! You got one more right there!
John Bender: You really think I give a shit?
Richard Vernon: Another! You through?
John Bender: How many is that?
Brian Johnson: That's seven including when we first came in and you asked Mr. Vernon whether Barry Manilow knew that he raided his closet.
Richard Vernon: Now it's eight. You stay out of this.
Brian Johnson: Excuse me sir, it's seven.

I had absolutely no idea who John Hughs was until today. As it turns out, he was one of the main forces behind some of my favorite films.
I love Christmas and European Vacation. Also Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

John Hughes, the writer and director who is mostly well known for era-defining crap like “Sixteen Candles” and “the Breakfast Club”, not to mention the “Home Alone” movies, died today of a heart attack at the age of 59.
But I’m not here to trash the dude, because he also wrote “the Great Outdoors” and wrote and directed “Uncle Buck” and “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”. People forget how awesome John Candy was, which sucks because, as previously implied, he was awesome. He died way too young at the age of 44, and the world of comedy was lesser for it. Although considering he was morbidly obese, 44 was practically immortal.

There are too many of his films that I love, I couldn't even try to put them in order of favorites. He put out the quintessential 80s movie, movies that I grew up on.
I HATE dayton.

Yup. I don't think you can be our age and not know Vacation, Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Weird Science and Ferris Bueller inside and out.
Also, Mr. Mom has one of my favorite movie quotes of all time. "220, 221, whatever it takes."

That list brings back a lot of cinematic memories. Not just the films, but who you saw those films with.
I had a girlfriend in high school obsessed with "Pretty in Pink."
What's interesting about that film is that is was one of the first that was exhaustively tested for audiences. In the original version Molly Ringwald ends up with Ducky rather than Andrew McCarthy
I saw "She's having a Baby" on there. Not the greatest film but I challenge you to not cry when she's struggling in labor and they play Kate Bush's sublime "This woman's world."
The "How bout them Bears" scene from PTA.
JCandy at Wally World in "Vacation."

1) Wierd Science: an f'ing classic right up ther w/ Animal House and Caddy Shack. 2) Also loved The Breakfast Club. To this day, I will stop and watch both movies if I see them on TV.
I know almost every line to both movies. Frightening indeed.
The guy was borderline Genius.

I had trouble falling asleep last night. So I decided to watch "Uncle Buck" via Netflix on my computer.
What an awful movie. Words really can't describe it. Probably the worst movie I've seen in years. Apparently that wasn't one of Hughes high points.
It makes me wonder if a lot of Hughes films haven't aged well.

I remember liking Uncle Buck when I was a kid. I guess it might be geared towards kids.
The film's two main characters (uncle buck and the teenage girl) are incredibly unlikable and even disturbing.
The film is pack filled with awkward moments.
Edit:
Roger Ebert agrees with me (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19890816/REVIEWS/908160302/1023):
What happens in "Uncle Buck" is not hard to anticipate, but what's surprising is how many wrong notes are sounded by the story, written and directed by John Hughes. Often it's a matter of tone. The rebellious teenager is too angry sometimes, too sharp to be sympathetic. A promiscuous neighbor (Laurie Metcalf), who comes over to make a play for Uncle Buck, is such a caricature that she doesn't amuse, she repels.
In one particularly uncomfortable scene, Uncle Buck confronts a grade-school teacher and flips her a quarter ("to go downtown and have a rat gnaw that growth off of your face"). The scene is handled with such a mean spirit that any possible humorous effect is lost, and we simply feel had afterward.
We also feel uneasy, most of the time, while Uncle Buck attempts to deal with the 15-year-old girl's relationship with her boyfriend. Buck delivers one long speech in which he offers to shave the lad's kneecaps with an ax, and a little later he comes after him with a power drill, and then locks him in a car trunk. Sure, the kid is no good, but these scenes seem borrowed from some black comedy from a bloodier universe than good old Buck seems to inhabit.

Looking at a list of his movie appearances, John Candy is a much more beloved actor than his work would indicate. So I guess it's natural that some of the bad films he starred in are hyped up because of how much people love him.

Uncle Buck. I'm guessing Guy doesn't or hasn't had a teenage daughter.
John Hughes was my elder sister's first date when we were growing up in Highland Park. I recognize alot of the scenes in his movies. The scene in Ferris Buehler when they are looking out over Lake Michigan was filmed right next to my Godfather's house. Nice house!

I can't help but think of the movie Dogma where Jay discusses The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink:
"Who thinks kids will actually show up for fucking detention? Everyone's a bunch of whiny pussies - except for Judd Nelson. He was fucking harsh."
(on Pretty in Pink)
"I can't even watch it with this tubby bitch (Silent Bob) anymore, because everytime he gets to the part where the girl gets her date, he starts crying like a girl with a skinned knee and shit."
